Where Do Thoughts Originate? The Consciousness-Only Model Explained

In the consciousness-only model, thoughts do not originate from the personal mind alone. Instead, infinite consciousness is the medium within which all experience arises. Thoughts are conditioned by personal sensations (like a toothache), shared events (like a pandemic), and past conditioning from childhood. As awareness expands and the boundary between individual and infinite consciousness becomes more porous, personal thoughts and feelings tend to diminish because there is no longer a clearly defined ego for them to revolve around. This expansion continues until the mind loses its limitations and is recognized as one with infinite awareness.

What Is the Consciousness-Only Model?

Rupert Spira begins by establishing a foundational principle: infinite consciousness is the medium or space within which everything literally arises. Just as materialist physics describes a single infinite indivisible physical space in which all bodies appear and interact, the consciousness-only model proposes that all experience occurs within a single infinite, indivisible presence of awareness.

In this framework, each individual mind is not separate from infinite consciousness but rather a temporary localization or perspective within it. Our minds do not exist outside consciousness any more than a whirlpool exists outside the ocean. This means that fundamentally, there is no "outside" of awareness—no realm beyond consciousness from which external forces could impinge upon our experience.

Spira uses a precise analogy to illustrate this: imagine infinite consciousness as a sheet of white paper. Each individual mind is drawn on this paper as a circle with a perforated (dotted) line. Your mind is one such circle, your daughter's mind is another nearby, and all seven billion minds of humans and trillions of animal minds are additional perforated circles on the same infinite paper. The key insight is that because each boundary is perforated—porous rather than solid—each finite mind is in contact with all other minds. They are not truly separate.

Where Do Thoughts Come From Inside Your Own Mind?

One source of thoughts is entirely personal and internal. When you experience a toothache, that sensation arises within your individual mind as a private experience not shared by other minds. This toothache then generates a thought: I need to call the dentist. In this case, the thought is directly caused by an occurrence within your own mind.

Spira emphasizes that personal experience conditions the types of thoughts that arise. Past conditioning from childhood shapes what thoughts can emerge. Your accumulated memories, habits, and learned patterns all influence the stream of thought that flows through your individual consciousness.

How Do Thoughts Arise From Events Outside Your Mind?

Not all thoughts originate from personal, private experience. Many thoughts are conditioned by events that take place outside your individual mind yet still within the collective field of consciousness. Spira gives a contemporary example: the coronavirus pandemic. This situation is not simply a private experience within one person's mind; it is a situation shared by all minds—a genuinely external event that nonetheless generates thoughts within each person's individual mind.

The crucial clarification is that while these events are outside your mind, they are not outside consciousness. All events that condition your thoughts take place within consciousness itself, because there is nothing outside consciousness. The boundary between "inside your mind" and "outside your mind" is a conceptual distinction made within a single unified field of awareness, not a distinction between consciousness and something non-conscious.

Why Is Your Mind More Porous Than It Appears?

When asked whether the mind is porous enough to allow external influences to shape thoughts, Spira affirms: your own mind is indeed part of consciousness, and it has no truly solid boundary. If you imagine a boundary, that boundary is permeable. It allows influences to cross, just as a whirlpool is generated by tides and gravity operating from beyond what we might naively call "just the whirlpool itself."

The porous nature of individual mind means it is genuinely open to the larger field. Your thoughts are not trapped in a sealed container but arise from a rich interplay of personal sensation, shared circumstances, and past conditioning—all of which arise within infinite consciousness.

What Happens When the Boundary Becomes More Porous?

Spira describes an evolutionary process: as we explore our experience more deeply, we begin to recognize that the self of each of us is the self of infinite awareness. The boundary that seems to demarcate our individual mind becomes thinner and thinner, or more and more porous, as in the questioner's language. Alternatively, one could say the circle that encloses our mind begins to expand.

At a certain point in this expansion, the circle loses its form altogether. There is no longer a clearly defined personal boundary or ego. Yet personal thoughts and sensations do not completely cease; rather, they tend to die down because there is no longer a personal self or ego for them to revolve around. Without the gravitational pull of a strong sense of personal identity, thoughts and feelings lose their urgency and compulsive quality.

How Does the Mind Recognize Its Unity With Infinite Consciousness?

As the boundary between individual and infinite consciousness becomes increasingly permeable, the mind does not dissolve into nothingness. Instead, awareness expands until it loses its limitations and is recognized to be one with infinite consciousness. In religious language, Spira says, this is union with God's presence.

This recognition involves a shift from identifying with the contents of the personal mind—the stream of personal thoughts, feelings, and sensations—to identifying with the awareness in which all contents appear. You recognize yourself as the infinite space or presence within which finite thoughts, sensations, and perceptions arise, rather than as the finite personal self.

What Is the Role of Pace and Presence in This Process?

The questioner opens the dialogue by noting that simply slowing down and listening to Spira speak—being part of the slower pace—allowed a shift in experience. There is an implicit teaching here: the expansion of consciousness and the softening of ego boundaries is not achieved through effortful thinking but through a quality of presence and receptivity. When you slow down and truly listen, you create the conditions for deeper awareness to emerge.

This suggests that the "goal" of existence, as the questioner phrases it, is not to accumulate knowledge but to become increasingly open, increasingly porous, increasingly receptive to the larger consciousness that is always present and is always your true nature.

Where to Go From Here

If you resonate with this teaching, consider investigating your own direct experience. Notice where your thoughts come from in real time. When you have a thought, can you identify whether it arose from a personal sensation, a shared circumstance, or past conditioning? Can you observe the thought without identifying with it, or without assuming it proves the existence of a separate personal thinker?

Practice slowing down and listening—to others, to silence, to the space between thoughts. Notice what happens to the sense of a separate self when you release the habit of constant mental activity. Explore the possibility that your individual mind is not a sealed container but a permeable opening through which infinite consciousness is constantly expressing itself.

Finally, consider retreats or sustained periods of contemplative practice where you can explore these insights more deeply under guidance. Intellectual understanding alone does not produce the recognition Spira describes; it is direct realization that transforms experience.

[0:01] uh just one comment and one question the

[0:03] comment very short was the thing I

[0:04] appreciated this morning was sort of I

[0:07] think I got more out of the pace at

[0:09] which you speak and listen and it just I

[0:13] feel like I'm in such a hurry always

[0:15] that just me just hearing and being part

[0:18] of it just

[0:19] slowed me down and I kind of just sank

[0:21] into a different pace of my life which

[0:25] I have the golden opportunity to

[0:27] experience more and more of these things

[0:29] so good I appreciate the nudge that

[0:33] being with this group gave me so my

[0:36] question came from a few days ago you

[0:37] were speaking I believe his name was Max

[0:40] and it was he was walking down the

[0:42] street and had thoughts of I like this

[0:44] person I don't like this person yes and

[0:47] uh and you sort of answered it in the

[0:50] last couple days that but my question is

[0:52] about the origin of thoughts and if we

[0:54] really

[0:55] do they come from me am I aware of them

[0:58] outside of me and I like your analogy of

[1:00] the whirlpool and the and the sky and

[1:04] and all that but it started me thinking

[1:06] that a Whirlpool or a wave in the ocean

[1:08] is

[1:11] arises from forces outside of the ocean

[1:14] like gravity or Tides or something so I

[1:17] started in continuing that analogy

[1:19] started thinking where do my where do

[1:21] these thoughts come from outside of

[1:23] myself is there an outside force is it a

[1:26] universal Consciousness that I just am

[1:28] perceiving in a unique way anyway that's

[1:31] okay my question where do thoughts arise

[1:34] from and how attached I am to them or

[1:38] you get the idea

[1:39] okay okay

[1:42] so

[1:43] um Mitchell in in this perspective uh

[1:48] infinite Consciousness is the

[1:51] the medium or the space or the container

[1:54] within which everything

[1:57] literally everything arises so there is

[2:00] no outside of awareness now we we will

[2:05] come back to that either in this

[2:06] conversation or

[2:08] okay but so just just at least accept

[2:11] that as a possibility

[2:13] so in just the same way that there is no

[2:17] from a conventional materialist point of

[2:19] view there is no outside of physical

[2:21] space everything there is in the

[2:24] universe takes place inside a single

[2:26] infinite indivisible space so from this

[2:30] perspective everything takes place

[2:32] inside an infinite indivisible

[2:34] space like presence of awareness or

[2:38] Consciousness including each of our

[2:39] minds which are like localizations

[2:44] individual localizations or perspectives

[2:47] within a single infinite mind or

[2:51] Consciousness so just like under the

[2:54] materialist Paradigm each of our bodies

[2:57] appear in the same physical space and

[3:00] are therefore in contact with one

[3:03] another likewise

[3:05] in this Consciousness only model each of

[3:09] our minds is precipitated or localized

[3:12] Within

[3:13] same infinite Consciousness and for the

[3:16] same reason each of our minds is in

[3:18] contact with one another now what so do

[3:22] with that as a general comment what what

[3:24] is it that um

[3:25] conditions or influences the content of

[3:29] our thoughts they may be the content of

[3:33] our thoughts may be conditioned from

[3:34] experiences that we have that say for

[3:38] instance you have a toothache that is

[3:41] your own that is a private experience

[3:43] within your own mind that is not shared

[3:46] by any other mind

[3:48] and that thought sorry that that

[3:51] sensation the toothache will

[3:54] will generate the thought

[3:57] I need to call the dentist

[3:59] so in this case the thought

[4:01] I need to call the dentist is caused by

[4:05] An Occurrence that takes place within

[4:07] your individual mind

[4:09] yes but they

[4:12] there is much much more to Consciousness

[4:16] than the content of any one individual

[4:18] mind or even the total of all individual

[4:22] minds and some of the thoughts in our

[4:24] mind are generated by events that take

[4:29] place outside

[4:30] with your mind and yet still within the

[4:35] collective Consciousness name namely the

[4:37] coronavirus that is not simply a

[4:40] situation within your own mind the

[4:43] situation that is shared by all minds

[4:45] and that situation which is outside your

[4:48] mind

[4:49] but inside Consciousness generates

[4:52] thoughts within your own mind in other

[4:55] words thoughts may be caused by

[4:57] occurrences that happen inside your mind

[4:59] or outside your mind but in both cases

[5:02] they take that they are all the events

[5:05] that cause your thoughts take place in

[5:07] the Consciousness because there is

[5:09] nothing outside consciousness

[5:14] I'm I'm working on that but uh wouldn't

[5:17] in my mind be part of the Consciousness

[5:21] as well absolutely mind and out of my

[5:23] mind seem to be absolutely Concepts if

[5:26] that you're absolutely you're right your

[5:29] own mind

[5:30] is just a temporary localization of the

[5:33] only mind there is which is infinite

[5:35] Consciousness and Mitchell by way of

[5:38] analogy imagine a imagine a piece of

[5:41] white paper

[5:43] okay on to that piece of white paper

[5:46] draw with a pencil in your imagination a

[5:49] a circle with a a dotted line

[5:54] yeah a perforated line right the paper

[5:57] the white paper represents infinite

[6:00] Consciousness that that the perforated

[6:03] the tiny perforated Circle

[6:07] um indicates your individual mind

[6:09] and now imagine drawing another

[6:13] perforated

[6:15] Circle next next door to your mind

[6:20] uh in close proximity to your mind is

[6:22] that that would be your daughter's mind

[6:25] and now imagine drawing seven billion

[6:28] perforated circles and seven trillion if

[6:31] you include all the animals on the same

[6:33] piece of white paper they would

[6:35] represent all the finite minds of all

[6:37] the people and animals

[6:39] in the universe each circle

[6:42] would be a a temporary

[6:46] localization

[6:49] each circle would enclose a certain

[6:51] portion of infinite Consciousness but

[6:53] because each circle is drawn with a

[6:55] perforated line each in each finite mind

[6:58] is in touch with

[7:00] all other Minds so you're right your own

[7:03] mind is is within Consciousness and

[7:06] because the boundary of your mind in

[7:08] fact your mind has no boundary but but

[7:10] if you imagine it having a boundary that

[7:12] boundary is porous

[7:14] which enables it to to absorb influences

[7:17] across its permeable membrane so to

[7:21] speak

[7:22] and another place from which you're

[7:25] another another realm of experience

[7:27] which

[7:28] influences or causes your thoughts is

[7:30] your own past conditioning

[7:33] experiences you have you had in

[7:35] childhood for instance condition the

[7:38] types of thoughts that arise in your

[7:40] mind

[7:41] so all sorts of influences internal and

[7:45] external to your own mind influence the

[7:48] types of thoughts you have but they all

[7:49] arise within consciousness

[7:54] okay right am I am I responding

[7:57] absolutely absolutely just when you were

[7:59] speaking to I was thinking is perhaps

[8:01] the goal of

[8:03] my our existence is to make that those

[8:06] that perforated line less more porous

[8:09] and allow more

[8:12] that's a very nice way of putting it yes

[8:16] or making it more porous so so that

[8:20] imagine some very

[8:23] uh dense Minds you would draw their

[8:27] minds with a circle that almost no space

[8:30] yeah almost a complete solid line that

[8:32] no minds are completely impermeable but

[8:35] some are a little more dense than others

[8:38] and then the more we explore our

[8:41] experience in this way we the more we

[8:43] realize that the self of each of us is

[8:45] the self of infinite awareness that the

[8:48] line that demarks our own mind

[8:52] gets thinner and thinner and it begins

[8:55] to or or to use your analogy it gets

[8:58] more and more porous or you could say

[9:00] that that the line the circle that

[9:03] encloses our mind expands yeah and at

[9:06] some point it it loses its form

[9:08] altogether and we simply know ourselves

[9:11] as

[9:13] infinite awareness

[9:16] albeit with

[9:18] finite thoughts Sensations and

[9:20] perceptions appearing in it but there is

[9:22] no longer a personal boundary there are

[9:25] personal thoughts and feelings but there

[9:27] is no longer a personal boundary in

[9:29] other words a personal self

[9:32] around whom those

[9:35] thoughts revolve and as a result

[9:37] that that the personal thoughts and

[9:40] feelings tend to die down because there

[9:42] is no longer a clearly defined personal

[9:45] self or ego

[9:48] for them to revolve around so yes that

[9:50] would be a a a a very nice way of of

[9:53] describing the the process of evolution

[9:56] yes the the expanding of the mind until

[9:59] it loses its limitations and is

[10:01] recognized to be one with infinite

[10:03] Consciousness or in religious language

[10:05] with God's presence

[10:08] all right

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Thoughts arise from multiple sources within consciousness: personal internal experiences like physical sensations, shared external events like a pandemic, and past conditioning from childhood. All these sources exist within infinite consciousness, not outside it, so the boundary between 'your mind' and 'outside your mind' is more porous than it appears.
The consciousness-only model proposes that infinite consciousness is the medium within which all experience arises, analogous to how physical space is the medium in which all bodies exist. Individual minds are temporary localizations within this single infinite consciousness, not separate entities.
As you recognize your mind's permeability and connection to infinite consciousness, your attachment to personal thoughts naturally diminishes because there is no longer a clearly defined ego for them to revolve around. Personal thoughts still appear but with less urgency and compulsive force.
The process involves slowing down, practicing receptive listening, and exploring your experience directly rather than through effortful thinking. As you recognize that the boundary of your mind is not solid but permeable, awareness naturally expands and the sense of separation softens.
As the mind's boundary becomes more porous and expands, the circle eventually loses its form altogether. There is no longer a clearly defined personal self, yet finite thoughts and sensations continue to appear within infinite awareness without the gravitational pull of a strong ego.
No. The goal is not the elimination of thoughts and feelings but the recognition that infinite consciousness is your true nature. Personal thoughts and sensations continue but tend to die down naturally because they no longer serve the maintenance of a separate self or ego.
Childhood experiences and learned patterns create mental grooves or habits that influence which thoughts arise in your individual mind. These form part of the conditioning—both internal and external—that determines the content of your thought stream within consciousness.
