Mingtong Gu, Named Qigong Master of the Year by the 13th World Congress on Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine, teaches a foundational qigong practice called Lai Chi—literally "pouring the chi"—for activating and directing healing energy. The method combines a specific hand position (fingers curved, tips pointing toward each other to create an energetic sphere), slow meditative movement, visualization of an expanding and contracting energy ball, and synchronized sound tones. By engaging both mind and body through relaxation and concentration, practitioners can feel and direct subtle energy for healing themselves and others. The practice requires no special equipment and can be performed sitting, standing, or lying down.

What Is Lai Chi and How Does It Work?

Lai Chi, as Mingtong Gu explains, means "pouring the chi"—the literal ability to direct life-force energy wherever it is needed (20s). Unlike many qigong systems that focus on storing energy or moving it through specific meridian pathways, Lai Chi emphasizes the conscious direction of chi into targeted areas of the body or into other people for healing purposes.

The practice operates on two core recognition principles. First, when the mind is busy or distracted, we fail to notice the subtle energy that constantly affects our physical body and wellbeing. Second, a busy mind cannot engage in the creative work of actively generating and reshaping energy patterns. Mingtong Gu calls these two aspects "recognition" and "initiation"—recognizing that subtle energy exists, and then initiating new patterns by directing it with relaxed intention (222s).

How Do You Position Your Hands to Create the Energy Sphere?

The foundational position is deceptively simple. Hold both hands in front of you at approximately one hand's distance apart, with fingers slightly curved and fingertips pointing toward each other. The palms face each other, and the thumb and forefinger form an open "tiger mouth"—a term from traditional qigong referring to the web of space between thumb and index finger (65s, 72s). This configuration is not arbitrary; it creates a natural energetic circuit between the two hands and activates multiple energy meridians and gates running through the fingers, hands, arms, and connected to the heart, lungs, liver, and brain (97s).

The distance between the hands matters. When hands are held farther apart, you access more subtle, less tangible energy. When hands are closer or touching, you activate more solid, physical energy that you can feel more obviously as sensation (140s, 145s). For beginners, the recommended distance—about one hand's width—creates a balance between these two types of energy.

Comfort is key. Whether you are sitting, standing, or lying down, the hands can be positioned higher or lower as long as the position feels natural and sustainable (48s, 53s). This accessibility is intentional: qigong movements in this system are designed to be gentle and adaptable for all body types and mobility levels.

What Happens When You Move Your Hands Slowly?

Once the hand position is established, the movement is almost imperceptible—opening and closing the hands by just a few inches (164s, 172s). The slowness is not a limitation; it is the mechanism that awakens sensation. As Mingtong Gu teaches, "the more slow you move, more relaxed you become, and also more your mind quieting down start to feel more energy" (185s, 192s).

Slow movement serves multiple functions. It allows the shoulders, arms, and hands to relax rather than contract, and it keeps the armpits open so energy can flow freely through the torso (200s, 207s). It quiets the thinking mind, which is essential because a quiet mind can perceive and direct subtle sensations. And it creates the conditions for the practitioner to feel energetic resistance, pulsation, and magnetic sensation between the palms—physical signs that chi is being concentrated and activated (311s, 319s).

How Do Visualization and Energy Sensing Work Together?

Once the hands are moving slowly, the next step is to close the eyes and begin visualizing an intense, bright sphere of energy between the palms. This is not passive imagining; it is active mental engagement synchronized with physical sensation. As the hands move outward, the imagined energy ball expands; as the hands move inward, it gathers and compresses like a "bloom of chi" (279s, 303s).

The visualization works most effectively when the mind is engaged in making effort while simultaneously allowing the body to relax. Mingtong Gu describes this paradox: "you're continuously visualizing the movement of the energy ball in a relaxed way in the same time making the best effort concentrating and same time allow the finger relax softening" (333s, 340s). As the hands move more slowly and the visualization deepens, the sensation of energy becomes stronger—not weaker, as might be expected, but stronger (361s, 366s, 372s).

The sensations practitioners report include resistance (a subtle push-back against the hands), pulsation (rhythmic throbs of energy), and a magnetic feeling between the palms (311s, 319s). These are not imaginary; they are the body's direct perception of chi accumulation and movement, accessible to anyone willing to slow down enough to notice.

What Role Does Sound Play in Activating Chi?

Sound is integrated into the practice as a synchronizer and amplifier. When the hands open, practitioners vocalize "Kai" (pronounced "K-AI"); when the hands close together, they vocalize "He" (pronounced like "eh") (410s, 417s). These syllables are not arbitrary but are drawn from traditional qigong and Taoist sound practice, where specific tones are believed to resonate with and activate different organs and energy centers.

The sound serves several purposes. It synchronizes the rhythm of hand movement with breath and intention, creating coherence between body, mind, and voice. It provides an anchor for attention when the mind begins to wander. And it generates vibration that some practitioners experience as amplifying the sensations of the energy ball (399s, 406s).

Can You Direct This Energy for Healing Others?

Once the practitioner has felt the energy ball becoming stronger through repeated practice—what Mingtong Gu calls "Lai practice"—the energy can be consciously directed for healing purposes (509s, 518s). The same sphere that has been visualized and felt between the hands can now be mentally projected into any area of the body: the brain, heart, lungs, legs, or any organ system that needs support (529s, 534s).

The energy can also be directed into another person. Using the hands as an extension of the mind's intention, the practitioner concentrates the accumulated energy and "pours" it toward whoever needs healing (539s, 549s). This advanced application requires that the practitioner have already developed a felt sense of the energy through consistent basic and intermediate practice; it cannot be forced or fabricated.

A more refined variation involves gathering "source energy"—a deeper reserve of life-force energy beyond what is immediately circulated in the meridian system—and concentrating it toward a specific purpose or location (545s). This represents an advanced stage of practice that builds on the foundation established by the basic light ball movements.

How Often Should You Practice, and What Results Can You Expect?

Mingtong Gu emphasizes that "the key is practice" and recommends repeating the rhythm of opening and closing as a regular, sustained practice (509s, 518s). He does not specify an exact duration or frequency in this introduction, but the implication is that consistency matters more than intensity.

The system is designed in stages: basic, intermediate, and advanced (560s, 565s). Beginners start by learning the hand position, practicing slow relaxed movement, adding visualization, and then incorporating sound. As sensation becomes more tangible and control over the energy improves, practitioners can move to intermediate applications such as directing energy into specific body areas. Eventually, the system allows for advanced healing work, which includes directing source energy for more powerful and specific therapeutic outcomes.

Results vary from person to person, and individual experience depends on factors such as consistency of practice, natural sensitivity to subtle sensation, and the quality of relaxation and mental focus brought to the work.

Where to Go from Here

This introduction to Lai Chi provides the foundation for understanding how to activate your innate healing capacity. The next steps are to practice the basic hand position and movement daily, begin to notice the sensations that arise, and gradually integrate visualization and sound. The Chi Center offers video guides progressing from basic to intermediate to advanced levels, as well as online courses and retreat programs for deepening practice under direct instruction. The work requires no special equipment or location—only a willingness to slow down, relax, and pay attention to the subtle energetic sensations that accompany focused intention and breath awareness.

[0:20] and specifically for healing not only

[0:24] for yourself but also for others so Lai

[0:28] literally means La Means pouring the

[0:32] chi CH La Chi then you're pouring the

[0:36] chi any place as you wish so in the

[0:39] beginning step you focus

[0:41] on the energetic movement very simple so

[0:45] the hands is like this and of course if

[0:48] you're sitting standing or lying down

[0:50] whatever position you want to put hands

[0:53] in your comfortable position and so can

[0:56] be lower can be higher whatever

[0:59] comfortable position might be so you're

[1:01] holding hands in such a way about one

[1:05] hand distance between the fingertips the

[1:08] finger slightly curved and the tiger

[1:12] Mouse open this is Tiger Mouse open so

[1:15] finger tips and curved by pointing to

[1:19] each other and the sum all the

[1:21] fingertips got pointing to each other

[1:25] and creating a sphere creating a sphere

[1:28] creating a sphere and the calm naturally

[1:31] open and there's so much Maran energy

[1:35] points energy Gates Slow the fingers

[1:37] slow the hands to the arm connecting

[1:40] with your heart your lung your liver

[1:42] your brain and so on connecting with the

[1:45] entire body so by connecting both side

[1:50] like this you're energetically

[1:52] activating and the energetic flow

[1:55] between two hands between left side and

[1:59] right side between the connection of the

[2:03] meridian energy flow in the entire

[2:06] system so simply by holding this

[2:09] position you're activating the energy in

[2:12] such way already and it's very powerful

[2:15] and of course when you're touching like

[2:17] this you're activating the energy too

[2:20] and it's very different when you open

[2:22] like this you're activating more Sol

[2:25] energy he is more physical more tangible

[2:28] more solid energy speed

[2:31] and you feel the skin s here's you're

[2:33] feeling more subtle energy so you can

[2:37] access more energy by holding hands away

[2:41] from each other then the movement is

[2:44] very

[2:45] subtle just few inches

[2:49] movement

[2:50] opening

[2:52] closing opening closing when you follow

[2:56] this movement just follow me when you're

[2:58] watching the video so you can start feel

[3:02] some

[3:05] sensation and slow you move more

[3:09] energetic you can feel on one hand when

[3:12] you move in slowly you allow your hands

[3:16] fingers arms shoulders

[3:20] relax and keep your armpit open

[3:23] always so the energy can flow better

[3:27] again more slow you move more relaxed

[3:30] you become and also more your mind

[3:33] quetting down start to feel more

[3:38] energy and the two aspect equally

[3:42] important to recognize when walking with

[3:44] energy one is when the mind is busy

[3:49] we're not recognizing the subtle energy

[3:52] affecting our life affecting our body

[3:56] affecting our

[3:57] wellbeing and secondly when the mind is

[4:00] busy then it's difficult to engage in a

[4:03] creative process and directly working

[4:06] with

[4:07] energy so one is recognition and another

[4:11] is initiation you're creating a new

[4:14] patterns when the mind is relaxed more

[4:21] clear so the next step is engaging the

[4:24] mind so what you can do is start closing

[4:29] your eyes

[4:30] eyes while the hands is moving as slow

[4:34] as

[4:35] possible opening

[4:39] closing opening

[4:43] closing and imagining above energy

[4:46] between the palm and that b energy is so

[4:51] intense so

[4:53] bright so somatically

[4:57] felt expanding

[5:00] then

[5:01] Gathering

[5:03] expanding Gathering like a bloom of chi

[5:08] expanding when you push in you start

[5:11] feel the sensation of resistance the

[5:15] sensation of pulsation a sensation of

[5:19] magnetic

[5:29] feeling so you're continuously

[5:33] visualizing the movement of the energy

[5:36] ball in a relaxed way in the same time

[5:40] making the best effort

[5:43] concentrating and same time allow the

[5:46] finger relax

[5:58] softening now you starting feeling

[6:01] stronger

[6:03] stronger more you relax more you

[6:06] visualize in the energy and slower you

[6:09] moving the hand and the stronger energy

[6:12] you start

[6:14] feeling and just simply noticing the

[6:25] sensation then the next step you can

[6:28] incorporating

[6:39] the sound into the simple movement

[6:43] synchronizing the movement the Rhythm

[6:46] with the

[6:47] sound the sound is very simple when the

[6:50] hands open you change in Kai like K AI

[6:55] when his hands coming together changing

[6:57] her like Ed e i o h e

[7:03] r so you can follow the vibration follow

[7:07] the sound with me together right now

[7:11] hands

[7:13] [Music]

[7:14] [Applause]

[7:17] [Music]

[7:18] open

[7:26] k k

[7:28] [Music]

[7:41] k

[7:43] [Music]

[7:46] k now holding your

[7:50] hands relaxing visualizing

[7:54] feeling the sensation

[8:04] now slowly open your eyes relaxing

[8:09] yourself so this is a very basic

[8:12] introduction to reval with you the basic

[8:15] um Step of latching the hand

[8:19] position and the relaxation the movement

[8:23] and the basic visualization the basic

[8:26] sound and then the key is practice so

[8:29] repeat in this rhythm of open

[8:33] close as a regular practice we call Lar

[8:38] practice then the next step is once

[8:41] you're feeling the energy the energy

[8:43] becomes stronger stronger in that

[8:45] process then you can use that energy for

[8:49] purpose of healing so you can put this

[8:52] energy ball wherever it's needed you can

[8:54] put it in your brain you can put it in

[8:56] your heart you can put it into your leg

[8:59] and also can put it into another person

[9:02] basically and also another dimension is

[9:05] how to use the source energy Gathering

[9:07] the source energy

[9:09] to um where you want to concentrate so

[9:12] using the hand to concentrate as

[9:15] extension over your mind and that's is

[9:17] more advanced stage of practice so again

[9:20] to have more video and audio and

[9:23] practice session guide you from the

[9:25] basic then to the intermediate then to

[9:29] the advanced stage more application in

[9:31] term of healing in term of session so

[9:37] and enjoy the practice continuously use

[9:40] this uh incredible material and to

[9:43] deepen in your practice and forf feeling

[9:46] your wisdom capacity so the best wish to

[9:51] you to your practice to your family and

[9:54] to your fulfillment

Yes, once you have developed a strong felt sense of the energy ball through consistent practice, you can use it to direct healing chi toward another person by mentally concentrating the accumulated energy and extending it through your hands toward them.
Lai Chi literally means 'pouring the chi'—it refers to the practice of consciously directing life-force energy wherever it is needed, whether into your own body areas or toward another person for healing.
Slow movement allows the mind to quiet down and the body to relax, which enables you to perceive and accumulate subtle energy sensations. A relaxed, focused mind can generate stronger energetic patterns than a tense or distracted one.
You can practice sitting, standing, or lying down in whatever comfortable position works for you. The qigong movements are designed to be adaptable and accessible regardless of body type or mobility level.
Synchronized vocalizations like 'Kai' during hand opening and 'He' during closing synchronize movement with breath and intention, provide an anchor for attention, and generate vibration that amplifies the sensations of the energy ball.
No, the practice is designed as a progressive system starting with basic hand position and movement for beginners. Anyone can begin learning the foundational techniques; advancement to intermediate and advanced healing applications comes with consistent practice and developing sensitivity to subtle energy sensations.
