Everyone Is Already onthe Spiritual Path—Here's Why

Spirituality is not a separate pursuit reserved for monks or ascetics. Everyone is already engaged in a spiritual process through their fundamental desires for money, power, knowledge, and security. The difference between a directed spiritual practice and an unconscious one lies not in whether you are on the path, but in your level of awareness and consciousness. The real work is not to begin the spiritual journey, but to become conscious of the journey you are already on and redirect that energy with intention rather than allowing it to drive you blindly.

Are You Already on a Spiritual Path Without Realizing It?

One of the most liberating insights Sadhguru offers is that there is no such thing as a person who is not on the spiritual path. This runs counter to common assumptions that spirituality is something you must decide to "get into" or that it is reserved for a special category of people—yogis, monks, or the deeply religious.

Every human being, by virtue of being alive and conscious, is already engaged in a spiritual process. What determines whether this process is transformative or merely circular is not entry into spirituality, but the degree of consciousness and awareness you bring to your own motivations and actions. In other words, you are not outside the spiritual path looking in; you are already walking it. The question is whether you are walking it consciously or unconsciously.

How Are Desires for Money and Power Spiritual Pursuits?

The most fundamental aspect of Sadhguru's teaching on this topic is the reframing of what counts as a spiritual process. When you pursue money, you are pursuing the freedom and security that money represents. When you pursue power, you are seeking influence and control over your environment. When you pursue knowledge, you are seeking to understand the nature of existence or to master a domain. All of these are expressions of the human spirit reaching for something beyond its current state.

The spiritual dimension of these pursuits lies in their intention: you are always moving toward something you perceive as better, higher, or more complete than your current state. This movement—this constant reaching toward what is not yet—is the hallmark of a spiritual process. It reflects a fundamental human drive to transcend limitation and expand your sphere of being.

The problem is not that people pursue these things; the problem is that they pursue them unconsciously. Most people chase money or power without ever asking themselves: Why do I want this? What hole am I trying to fill? What will it actually give me once I have it? This unconsciousness means that the spiritual energy animating these pursuits becomes scattered, repetitive, and often frustrating. You achieve one milestone only to find yourself chasing the next, never arriving at a place of genuine fulfillment.

What Is the Difference Between Conscious and Unconscious Spirituality?

The distinction between a directed spiritual path and an unconscious one is consciousness itself. When you are unconscious about your own drives, you are like a ship without a rudder, pushed around by currents you do not understand. Your desires become compulsive rather than intentional. You act from habit, social conditioning, and fear rather than from clarity about what you truly value.

Consciousness, in this context, means self-awareness. It means stepping back from your automatic reactions and desires and asking: What am I actually seeking? What is the nature of this drive? Am I running toward something I genuinely value, or running away from something I fear? It is the difference between being driven by your mind and desires, and being able to observe and direct them.

When consciousness enters your spiritual process—whether that process is about making money, building a business, or deepening your meditation practice—the nature of the pursuit changes. You begin to act from intention rather than compulsion. You can make choices rather than simply react. You can see the patterns in your own behavior and gently redirect them. This is what makes a practice spiritual in the fullest sense: not what you are doing, but the awareness you bring to what you are doing.

Why Is Becoming Aware the Real Work?

The practical implication of this teaching is profound: you do not need to add anything to your life to "get started with spirituality." You do not need to adopt a new identity as a spiritual person, join a community, learn complicated techniques, or withdraw from the world. What you need to do is wake up to what you are already doing.

This does not mean your current pursuits are necessarily wrong or misguided. It means they are often misguided because they are unconscious. Someone might pursue wealth genuinely believing that money will bring them happiness, security, or freedom—without ever pausing to examine whether that belief is true or whether they have ever actually spoken to someone who has achieved wealth and asked them if those promises were fulfilled. Consciousness would involve looking at your own life and the lives around you to test your assumptions.

Becoming aware also means noticing the quality of your inner experience as you pursue your goals. Are you anxious? Are you driven by fear of failure or loss? Are you comparing yourself constantly to others? These signs indicate that your spiritual energy is being distorted and wasted on internal conflict rather than directed toward genuine growth. Awareness allows you to notice these patterns and begin to shift them.

How Can You Redirect Your Existing Spiritual Energy?

Once you recognize that you are already on a spiritual path, the next step is to recognize that you have a choice about where that path leads. You can continue to be driven unconsciously by your conditioning and fears, or you can begin to consciously direct your energy toward what genuinely matters to you.

This redirection does not necessarily mean abandoning your goals or pursuits. It might mean continuing to work toward financial security or professional success, but doing so with greater awareness of why these things matter to you and whether your methods are aligned with your values. It might mean noticing when you are chasing something out of genuine desire versus chasing it out of social pressure or ego.

For some people, this awakening leads to a shift in priorities. Once consciousness enters, some of the pursuits that seemed urgent before may lose their grip. You might realize that you do not actually need as much money as you thought, or that the career you were chasing does not align with what truly fulfills you. For others, the redirection is more subtle: the same pursuits continue, but with a different quality of presence and intention.

The key is that this redirection is always available to you because you are not entering spirituality from the outside. You are simply becoming conscious of what is already happening and taking the reins of your own consciousness rather than letting unconscious patterns drive your life.

Where to go from here

The invitation here is not to become a different person or to adopt a spiritual identity, but to become conscious. Start by noticing: What am I actually pursuing right now? What drives my daily choices? Why do I want what I want? What would it feel like to pursue my goals with full awareness rather than on autopilot? These questions are the beginning of a genuinely spiritual life, not because they are about meditation or enlightenment, but because they are about the most fundamental spiritual work—waking up to your own nature and your own power to direct your life with intention and awareness.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Yes, according to this teaching, everyone is already engaged in a spiritual process through their pursuit of money, power, knowledge, and security. The difference is whether you are doing this consciously or unconsciously.
These pursuits are spiritual because they reflect the human drive to transcend limitation and expand beyond your current state. The problem is usually that people pursue them unconsciously without understanding their true motivations or whether these goals will actually fulfill them.
The difference is not the goal itself, but the level of consciousness you bring to it. The same action—pursuing wealth, for example—can be either spiritual (conscious, intentional, aligned with values) or unconscious (driven by fear, conditioning, or compulsion).
Not necessarily. The work is not to add something new to your life, but to become aware of what you are already doing and redirect that energy with consciousness and intention rather than allowing unconscious patterns to drive you.
Start by asking yourself why you want what you want, whether your beliefs about what will fulfill you are actually true, and what quality of inner experience you have as you pursue your goals. Notice when you are driven by genuine desire versus social pressure or fear.
When you become aware, you shift from being driven by your mind and compulsions to being able to observe and direct them. Your actions become intentional rather than reactive, and your energy becomes focused rather than scattered.
No. You do not need to adopt a new identity, join a community, or withdraw from ordinary life. Becoming spiritual means waking up to what you are already doing and bringing greater awareness and intention to your existing pursuits and choices.
