The Cause of All Suffering:Inquiry Into What We Believe

Byron Katie
Byron Katie

Byron Katie teaches that the cause of all suffering is not what happens in the world, but what we think and believe about what happens. Through a practice called "The Work"—a four-question inquiry method—she invites people to question the thoughts creating their discontent, depression, and sense that others are against them. By honestly examining whether our thoughts are true, how we react when we believe them, and turning those thoughts around, we can wake from what she calls "the dream" of past and future, and return to the present moment where peace and balance naturally exist.

What Is the Actual Cause of Suffering?

Byron Katie begins by grounding her teaching in a simple observation: when you think of someone you love, or a beautiful moment you've shared, you naturally light up. That well-being, that sense of beauty and appreciation, is not dependent on whether the relationship lasted or exists now—it arises from the thought itself and the person witnessing that thought. This is the opposite of suffering. If everyone who came to mind produced this kind of balanced, grounded experience—not an agitated "oh my god I'm in love" but a settled well-beingness—you would live your life "with no downside and no bipolar upside" (1:25-1:40). You would simply be at home, stable, grounded.

Contrast this with what happens when you think about someone negatively. If you believe they're out to get you, or if you're haunted by what they said or did, you feel contracted, anxious, unable to sleep. You may call a doctor looking for a pill (4:64). But Katie's insight is radical: the suffering doesn't come from what they actually said or did. It comes from what you're thinking and believing about what they said or did. She states directly: "the cause of all suffering is what we're thinking and believing" (3:191).

This is not denial of reality. People do say things. People do act. But between the event and your suffering lies a thought—a belief about that event. That belief, if not questioned, becomes the substance of your inner world. Katie calls this a "mirage of what isn't now" (4:485). You're living in a story about past or future, not in the actual present where things are as they are.

How Does The Work Begin? The First Two Questions

Katie's method of inquiry, called "The Work," is not meditation in the sense of trying to quiet the mind or push thoughts away. It's the opposite. You sit with a thought, preferably one that's causing you suffering, and you ask four questions. The first two are exploratory; the last two are transformative.

Question one: Is it true? (3:310)

You think of something—"She said I was lazy." "He betrayed me." "I'm not good enough." And you drop into stillness and ask: is it true? At first, your mind may rush to defend the thought: "Yes, 15 people told me she said it. That's just like her. I know her." You're gathering evidence. Katie acknowledges this: "the answer is yes to the first two questions" (3:201). Yes, she said what she said. Yes, he did what he did. You can investigate the facts.

But as you continue to ask "is it true?"—really dropping into the question, not rushing to answer—something shifts. You begin to notice you can't absolutely know the internal experience of another person. You can't know their motives. You can't know what will happen next. The question becomes more honest, more humble. This is what Katie calls "beginning" (3:261).

Question two: Can I absolutely know that it's true?

This deepens the first question. You've established the facts—yes, she said it. But can you absolutely, with certainty, know what it means? Can you know that her intention was to harm you? Can you know that this reflects something true about you? This question opens space. As Katie says, "This is a practice it will show you as you continue to drop into the depths of your beautiful self" (3:273-3:289). The practice itself becomes your teacher. You're not trying to convince yourself of something; you're discovering what's actually true when you slow down and really look.

What Happens When You Believe the Thought? Question Three

Once you've examined whether the thought is true, Katie moves to the third question: How do I react when I believe the thought? (3:353)

This is where you witness the cause of your suffering directly. When you believe "she doesn't respect me," what happens? Do you stay awake or do you feel foggy? Do you sleep well? Do you reach out to her or do you withdraw? What's your attitude? What do you say? What do you do? Are you irritable with others? Do you drink, use drugs, overeat? Do you ruminate obsessively?

Katie emphasizes the full spectrum of your reaction: "what do i say what do i do what is what are what emotions happen when i believe the thought" (3:367-3:382). You're not analyzing this from above; you're feeling into it. You're witnessing the actual lived consequence of holding that thought as true. And here's the key: as you witness this, you're witnessing the cause of your suffering. Not her behavior. Not the event. Your belief about the event, and the way your entire organism reacts when you hold it as true.

Katie also points to the temporal quality of this suffering. When you believe the thought, you're not really here now. You're in "not now not now not now" (4:403)—she said this, he'll do that, I see it coming. You're imprisoned in past and future, unable to be present. That disembodied, anxious, always-bracing-for-the-next-blow feeling—that's what believing an unexamined thought does to you.

Turning It Around: The Power of Reversal

The fourth question, which Katie doesn't name explicitly in this talk but demonstrates, is: Is the opposite true? Or: Who would you be without this thought?

But Katie emphasizes a specific practice: turning the thought around. If you believe "She disrespected me," you reverse it: "I disrespected her." Then you look for evidence. Where did you disrespect her? Where did you judge her? Where did you fail to see her? This is not about blame. It's about recognizing your own part, your own agency, in the dynamic you've been suffering over.

Katie describes this moment with tenderness: "be gentle with yourselves be gentle with yourselves" (4:669). Because looking at your own part takes courage. You've been comfortable in the role of the wronged one. But as you see your part, something shifts: "now i'm in a position to make a difference" (4:716-4:745). You're no longer stuck waiting for someone else to change. You can change how you show up.

This is not about self-blame or toxic positivity. Katie is clear: "oh be gentle with yourselves." It's about waking up to your own agency and responsibility, which is actually liberating. Because if you caused the problem, you can also solve it. If it's all her fault, you're trapped. But if you see your part, you're free.

Living in the Present Moment: Beyond the Dream

Throughout the talk, Katie returns to a central image: we are living in a dream of what isn't now. We believe thoughts about the past and projections about the future, and these thoughts color everything. But the actual present moment—now, here, grounded—is different. She says: "the grace of now brings tears to my eyes such kindness" (4:502-4:533). When you're actually here, not lost in thought, there's an inherent okayness.

She's not suggesting you deny that thoughts are running. "It's just not to deny that it's running it's just not substance real" (4:521). Thoughts will arise. The mind will produce stories. But when you're awake to them as thoughts—as images, as mental events—rather than as facts, they lose their grip. You can smile at them. You can be curious about them. You can even find humor in them.

Katie uses the example of judging someone on a screen. The person isn't even in the room, isn't even present. Yet your thoughts about them—what you believe they said or did—create your experience as clearly as if they were physically there. "What i am thinking and believing even about an image on the screen you were this and you were that...so what i am thinking about you on the screen is my heaven or hell" (4:785-4:858). In other words, your inner world is entirely constructed of your thoughts and beliefs. Change those thoughts, and your world changes.

The Person Who Returns: Unfinished Inquiry

Katie addresses those who have practiced The Work for a while: sometimes people keep coming back to mind even after years of practice. Someone you hurt, someone who hurt you, someone you've lost. She doesn't treat this as failure. Instead, she sees it as unfinished business: "you're persistent just keep coming back until it's done" (4:1019-4:1033).

But here's what changes when the inquiry is complete: "when it's done you keep coming back and i'm filled with words like love appreciation gratitude i've made a home in me the home that you deserve" (4:1033-4:1049). The person still comes to mind. But the feeling has transformed. Instead of contraction and resentment, there's affection and gratitude. You've made a home for them in your own heart. As she says earlier: "you live here and i can't bury you with drugs or alcohol pretending i'm marvelous i can't be home in myself until you can rest in me" (4:948-4:968). The work isn't about getting rid of people from your mind. It's about being at peace with them when they do appear, so you can finally rest.

Where to Go from Here

Byron Katie's teaching is rooted in a simple practice: notice the thought causing you suffering, and question it. Is it true? Can I absolutely know it's true? How do I react when I believe it? Who would I be without it? What's the opposite? This isn't positive thinking or affirmation. It's honest inquiry. It requires stillness, curiosity, and a willingness to look at yourself without flinching.

The promise is not that life will be problem-free or that difficult things won't happen. The promise is that you will stop adding suffering on top of what happens. You'll be awake to the dream, and therefore free within it. You'll find the balance and well-beingness that exists naturally when your thinking is in tune with reality rather than at war with it. And perhaps most importantly, you'll discover that the work of freedom is always internal—not waiting for others to change, but waking up to what you're already believing about them.

[0:01] something beautiful

[0:06] let's say the way i see

[0:10] you is it

[0:13] that really is the something

[0:16] beautiful

[0:20] the way you see

[0:23] that person you've experienced in your

[0:25] life where

[0:27] you just think of them and you light up

[0:31] you know it could be a love affair that

[0:34] did or didn't last

[0:36] or the best moments in that love affair

[0:39] it's when you think of that person

[0:43] and you're witnessing

[0:47] something beautiful it's the opposite of

[0:50] suffering we can say that

[0:54] so what if

[0:57] everyone you had

[1:02] everyone that came to your mind

[1:06] you experienced that kind of

[1:12] experience

[1:15] but it wasn't oh my god i'm so in love

[1:18] oh my gosh i think of him or her

[1:20] and i'm just

[1:25] balanced

[1:28] balance so you live your life

[1:31] in the world out of this

[1:35] well-beingness this balance with

[1:38] no downside

[1:42] and no bipolar upside

[1:47] balance now these upsides

[1:53] will give you reference for

[1:56] the beauty of a mind that is in tune

[2:01] with your heart in tune with your true

[2:07] nature when you're

[2:09] not you know when you're depressed

[2:11] you're not feeling so great or you feel

[2:13] like someone's out to get you

[2:16] or thinking terrible thoughts about you

[2:18] that is you

[2:20] thinking about that person

[2:24] so when you're thinking about that

[2:26] person

[2:30] that is not a match

[2:33] you know negatively that is not a match

[2:36] to your true nature

[2:39] so what is my life about it's about

[2:42] sharing away inviting

[2:48] people in to a way

[2:53] that can question the cause

[2:56] of their suffering their discontent

[3:02] their off-balance

[3:11] the cause of all suffering is what we're

[3:13] thinking and believing

[3:15] and we can say yeah but it's true what

[3:17] she said what he did

[3:21] okay so the answer is yes to the first

[3:23] two questions

[3:26] you meditate in it you make sure that

[3:29] you're right

[3:31] in that stillness he said this she

[3:35] did that

[3:40] is it true it's a quarry

[3:45] it's inquiry

[3:48] so i'm in that yes

[3:56] is it true did she really say that did

[3:58] she really do that

[4:01] i'm going to ponder that i'm just i'm

[4:03] you know i'm going to drop in again and

[4:05] see

[4:06] did i miss anything

[4:09] yes

[4:12] okay so now i'm clear she said what she

[4:15] said she did what she did

[4:17] and i'm a beginner i'm not going to drop

[4:21] in

[4:21] any deeper because i'm a beginner i

[4:24] don't even

[4:25] know the depths

[4:30] as i drop into is it true

[4:33] this is a practice it will show you

[4:37] as you continue

[4:40] to drop into the depths

[4:45] of your beautiful self

[4:49] this self that continues to give and

[4:52] give and give and give

[4:55] in the stillness in response to the

[4:58] question

[4:59] is it true okay so i have dropped in as

[5:03] deeply as i can

[5:04] first two questions are only four those

[5:07] of you new to the work this is inquiry

[5:10] is it true can i absolutely can i really

[5:14] know that it's true

[5:17] yeah she said it

[5:20] 15 people told me so

[5:24] they're all talking about it

[5:27] yep that's just like her i know her

[5:31] yes okay so i'm at a yes

[5:35] okay now i'm being honest

[5:39] this is me with me

[5:43] alone this is

[5:47] self-inquiry

[5:50] so yes yes okay now i'm going move how

[5:53] do i react what happens when i believe

[5:55] the thought

[5:57] and as i witness that

[6:03] i'm witnessing the cause of my suffering

[6:07] how do i react what do

[6:10] i say what do i do

[6:14] what is what are what emotions

[6:19] happen when i believe the thought and

[6:22] and those images of past future to get

[6:26] in touch with

[6:27] how the eagle's life depends on you

[6:30] buying its

[6:43] not now not now not now she did this she

[6:46] said that not

[6:47] now in the future she's gonna say that

[6:49] she's gonna i see it i see it i'm no

[6:51] fool i see it that's her yep done

[6:57] this is inquiry get still

[7:01] how do i react when i believe that

[7:06] okay back to looking at myself ah okay

[7:12] [Music]

[7:14] no i'm burning how do

[7:18] i react what do

[7:21] i say what do i do what is my

[7:25] attitude am i am am i am i

[7:28] unable to sleep at night i don't know

[7:30] why

[7:33] this thing that just runs in me all the

[7:35] time i don't know what it is i think

[7:37] i'll

[7:37] call the doctor surely they've got

[7:41] something for me there

[7:44] i'm not saying don't call the doctor i'm

[7:47] just saying

[7:52] there's suffering in the world and

[7:55] there's a cause of this suffering and

[7:56] the cause of this suffering is what

[7:58] we're

[7:58] thinking and believing

[8:02] it's the creation the

[8:05] a mirage

[8:09] of what isn't now

[8:13] the grace of now

[8:18] brings tears to my eyes

[8:22] such kindness

[8:28] who am i

[8:33] who am i without this

[8:36] not now not now state of mind running

[8:41] and that's not to deny that it's running

[8:43] it's

[8:44] just not

[8:48] substance real

[8:53] this just start with this

[8:56] now here now

[9:00] grounded

[9:05] and those of you that are students of

[9:06] the work

[9:09] you can start from there with that

[9:13] it's it's it's so amazing to

[9:17] to live in the world and go

[9:20] and smile like he

[9:24] and smile because you're awake

[9:28] to the cause of the

[9:34] he she it

[9:38] the world

[9:42] that i know

[9:45] mind inquiry can

[9:49] can take you to the i don't know

[9:53] mind the don't no mind that doesn't try

[9:56] to shut the images up

[9:58] or get rid of them but

[10:02] rather is awake to the dream

[10:08] wake to the dream

[10:17] she said did he

[10:22] when i flip that and i turn it around

[10:24] it's like oh i

[10:27] sometimes you can feel like just running

[10:30] to the sink or the toilet and just

[10:32] dumping it it is so

[10:42] sickening at first to look at oneself

[10:53] takes courage

[11:00] but that brings us back to original

[11:03] cause

[11:06] she said dead she did turned around

[11:09] oh be gentle with yourselves be

[11:15] gentle with yourselves

[11:21] just softly i

[11:27] said

[11:29] i did

[11:36] i hurt the reputation of that person

[11:41] i cause them injury

[11:45] i cause them

[11:56] my part now

[12:01] now

[12:05] i'm in a position to make a difference

[12:09] you know how i disliked her she that she

[12:12] that

[12:14] i can change one of those human beings

[12:18] and it's not her

[12:22] because of her

[12:25] i see my part

[12:29] in this world

[12:37] how

[12:46] why is this important for you that have

[12:48] been in the work for a while

[12:50] or because you're listening

[12:54] anyone listening witnessing this

[13:02] why is this important

[13:05] you're on the screen you're on the

[13:08] screen in front of me

[13:16] so what i am thinking and believing

[13:20] even about an image

[13:23] on the screen

[13:27] you were this and you were that dude

[13:35] busy ego

[13:38] identification of i

[13:41] judging a screen

[13:45] which is all there really is anyway

[13:49] i see what she said and did so you see

[13:52] how i'm pointing out

[13:54] no that's in where am i seeing it

[13:57] here she's not even in the room

[14:01] she's not even on the screen he

[14:04] she them so what i am thinking about

[14:18] you on the screen

[14:21] is my heaven or hell and i can't make

[14:24] believe it's heaven like oh they're just

[14:26] that's it

[14:27] oh they're just so beautiful this is

[14:29] something beautiful something

[14:33] we like that

[14:36] i wonder why it feels so good when i'm

[14:39] here

[14:39] at breakfast with byron katie we're here

[14:51] because we're tapping into something

[14:57] beautiful

[15:03] i think it's just the most incredible

[15:08] most amazing miracle that you are

[15:11] in me and your

[15:15] you are going to live in me

[15:19] and if you're not comfortable

[15:23] in me

[15:26] then i need to question what i'm

[15:28] thinking and believing about you

[15:36] you could be dead for 10 years but that

[15:38] doesn't stop me

[15:41] she he said

[15:45] there's no way we can bury you

[15:48] you live here and i can't bury you with

[15:51] drugs or alcohol

[15:54] pretending i'm marvelous

[16:04] i can't be home in myself

[16:08] until you can rest in me

[16:14] until you rest i can't rest

[16:18] the you i believe you to be

[16:30] you are my inspiration

[16:34] you hurt me you kicked me

[16:37] you are my inspiration how do i know

[16:41] you're my focus

[16:46] you've been dead for 10 years but you're

[16:47] my focus

[16:50] haven't seen you in five years you're my

[16:52] focus

[16:55] i'm not gonna get rid of you

[16:59] you're persistent just keep

[17:02] coming back until it's done

[17:06] and when it's done you keep coming

[17:10] back and i'm

[17:13] filled with

[17:16] words like love appreciation

[17:20] gratitude

[17:25] i've made a home in me

[17:29] the home that you deserve

[17:47] you

The Work is a four-question self-inquiry method designed to examine the thoughts and beliefs causing your suffering. By asking whether a thought is true, how you react when you believe it, and who you'd be without it, you can question the root cause of your discontent rather than remaining trapped in stories about past or future.
Suffering doesn't come from what happens in the world, but from what you think and believe about what happens. The same event—someone saying something harsh—can either hurt you deeply or not affect you at all, depending on the thought you attach to it and whether you question that thought.
Turning a thought around means reversing it—if you believe 'she disrespected me,' you ask where you disrespected her. This isn't about blame, but about recognizing your own part in a dynamic, which puts you in a position to actually change something rather than waiting for the other person to change.
The Work isn't about changing other people—it's about changing your relationship to your thoughts about them. Even if someone never changes, when you question your beliefs about what they did and what it means, you can find peace and be free internally, regardless of their external behavior.
No. Katie acknowledges that people say and do things—the facts are the facts. But between the fact and your suffering lies an interpretation or belief that you're holding as true. The Work helps you examine whether that belief is actually true and how it's affecting you, not deny reality.
Katie treats this as unfinished inquiry, not failure. The person may keep coming back until the thought loop is truly complete. But when the work is done, the quality of the return changes—instead of contraction and resentment, you feel love, appreciation, and gratitude for them.
The Work is investigative rather than meditative—you're not quieting the mind but directly questioning the thoughts causing suffering. It's also not positive thinking; it's honest inquiry into what's actually true, which often reveals that the negative story you were telling wasn't fully accurate.
