Be Impeccable With YourWord: Intent and Power

Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. explains that words are empty symbols whose power comes entirely from our intent. Every word we speak is animated by the same life force that moves our body and creates our thoughts. Being impeccable with your word means aligning your speech with your true intentions rather than using language to harm, domesticate, or go against yourself. This practice is inseparable from being impeccable with your intent and impeccable with yourself—all three are expressions of the same principle.

What Are Words, Really?

Ruiz Jr. begins with a foundational point: every word in our language is an empty symbol whose definition depends entirely on agreement. The word itself has no intrinsic meaning—we collectively agree on what it represents. This is why the word "agreement" itself is so important: it reflects the action of saying yes to something. An agreement only exists because people have said yes to a shared understanding (0:42–1:23).

This might seem obvious, but the implication is radical. If words are empty symbols, then their power doesn't come from the words themselves. It comes from somewhere else—from us.

How Does Intent Animate Words?

Ruiz Jr. traces the source of a word's power to intent. "Yes" is a three-letter word, but it represents far more than phonetic sound. It embodies "the moment we use the intent that animates this body that animates this mind to manifest something." When you say yes, you are directing the same energy that moves your arms and legs—the life force itself—toward creating or affirming something (1:24–1:42).

In this framework, "yes" is not merely agreement. It is the symbol of your will in action. Your "no" is equally powerful: it represents the choice not to use that animating energy to manifest a single thing. For as long as you say no to something, it will not happen. Both your yes and your no carry identical weight because they come from the same source—your intent, your will, the energy that animates you (1:43–2:26).

Where Does Your Word Get Its Power?

Ruiz Jr. makes an essential point: "My word has power because I give it power." This is not metaphorical. The same energy you use to animate your body and move your limbs is the same energy you use to create a thought. And at the root of every belief in your belief system sits a yes—a moment where you gave it power. Your word has power only because you are alive to give it power (2:27–2:47).

This means impeccability with your word is not really about grammar, politeness, or even truthfulness in a conventional sense. It's about the alignment between your intent and your words. If your intent is scattered, conflicted, or self-sabotaging, your word will reflect that and carry that energy. If your intent is clear, coherent, and aligned with your true self, your word becomes a tool of creation (2:48–3:00).

What Does It Mean to Be Impeccable With Your Word?

Ruiz Jr. offers a precise definition: "To be impeccable with the word is tantamount to saying be impeccable with my intent because it is my intent that gives power to the word." These are not separate practices. Impeccability with your word and impeccability with your intent are the same thing (3:01–3:16).

He extends this further: being impeccable with your word is also the same as being impeccable with yourself, because you are the one who gives power to your word. If you're using your word against yourself—if you're agreeing with self-doubt, shame, or limitation—then you're using your word to diminish your own power. If you're using your word to affirm, heal, and create, you're being impeccable with yourself (3:17–3:31).

How Can We Use Words as a Creative Tool?

Words function as a focal point. They direct the energy of your intent in a specific direction. You can use them to create what Ruiz Jr. calls "the most perfect nightmare or the most harmonious dream." The choice is yours, and it changes with every yes you give. Every time you say yes to a belief, an agreement, a fear, or a hope, you are redirecting your life's trajectory. Your words, animated by your intent, literally shape which direction your life moves (3:32–3:51).

This is why the metaphor of the "work of art" appears in the conclusion. Your life is not something that happens to you; it is something you create through the words you speak, the agreements you make, and the intentions you animate. To be impeccable with your word is to sculpt your life deliberately and consciously rather than letting unconscious, reactive speech construct it for you.

What Is the Shadow Side of Speaking?

Ruiz Jr. identifies two misuses of the word: using it to domesticate yourself and using it to domesticate others. Domestication here refers to limiting, conditioning, or controlling—either yourself or another person. Many people have been domesticated through language: told they're not good enough, not smart enough, not worthy. And many people use their own word to reinforce those limiting beliefs, speaking against themselves habitually (3:52–4:09).

Domesticating others through language means using your word to control, shame, judge, or limit another person's sense of possibility. This is the opposite of impeccability. The impeccable use of word, by contrast, is to heal yourself and others, to love unconditionally, and to create collaboratively—to build a shared work of art rather than a shared prison (4:10–4:23).

Where to Go From Here

The practice of impeccable speech begins with noticing where you use your word against yourself. Listen to your internal dialogue. What agreements are you saying yes to? What beliefs are you affirming through your language? Then observe how you speak to others and about others. Are you using your word to limit, judge, or control? Or are you using it to honor, heal, and create?

Remember that your word carries the energy you give it. If you speak from fear, your words will carry fear. If you speak from love and clear intent, your words will carry that instead. The practice is not about perfecting your diction—it's about aligning your intent with your speech, so that every yes you give is genuinely yours, and every word you speak contributes to the life and the world you actually want to create.

[0:10] hello good morning

[0:11] my name is don miguel ruiz jr

[0:14] welcome to another edition of the wisdom

[0:17] card series

[0:18] today is march 25th 2021

[0:23] and today i'm going to read from the

[0:25] deck of cards that are based on my

[0:26] father's book

[0:28] the four agreements written by don

[0:31] miguel ruiz

[0:32] published by amber allen publishing and

[0:35] hay house publishing

[0:37] today's card reads like this

[0:42] be impeccable with your word

[0:46] manifest your true intentions

[0:51] regardless of what language you speak

[0:54] your intent will manifest

[0:55] through the word what you dream what you

[0:58] feel

[0:59] and what you really are will all be

[1:01] manifested

[1:03] through the word

[1:08] every word we use in our language is an

[1:11] empty symbol whose definition

[1:13] is subject to agreement in fact

[1:16] the word agreement is simply reflecting

[1:19] the action of saying

[1:20] yes to something that's what makes it an

[1:22] agreement

[1:24] and of course our yes is a three-letter

[1:27] word

[1:28] that represents the action or the moment

[1:30] we use the intent

[1:32] that animates this body that animates

[1:34] this mind

[1:35] to manifest something it is a thing

[1:39] or the word the symbol

[1:42] that represents our infinite possibility

[1:45] because

[1:45] we can go in any direction in life

[1:49] in contrast our no

[1:53] is a symbol that represents the moment

[1:55] we choose

[1:56] not to use the energy that animates this

[1:58] body

[1:59] to manifest a single thing and for as

[2:02] long as we say no

[2:03] that won't be done our yes

[2:07] and i known also known as my will

[2:11] my no is just as powerful as my yes

[2:15] so when i use my yes to create an

[2:17] agreement

[2:18] it is to give power to that which i'm

[2:21] saying yes

[2:22] to thus my word

[2:25] has power because i give it power

[2:28] because the same energy i use to animate

[2:32] this body to move my arms to move my

[2:34] legs

[2:35] is exactly the same energy i use to

[2:36] create a thought

[2:38] and at the root of every belief i have

[2:40] in my belief system there is a yes

[2:42] that gives it power which means my word

[2:45] has power because i'm alive to give it

[2:49] power

[2:51] in other words to be impeccable with the

[2:54] word

[2:54] is tantamount to saying be impeccable

[2:58] with my intent because it is my intent

[3:01] that gives power to the word which is

[3:04] also

[3:05] like the same as saying be impeccable

[3:08] with yourself

[3:10] because it is you who gives power to

[3:11] your word

[3:14] and words we can use them as the focal

[3:17] point by which we want to create

[3:19] manifest live

[3:24] and that's why it's so powerful

[3:27] we use it as that symbol

[3:31] that allows us to direct in which

[3:33] direction

[3:35] we want to live in our life we can use

[3:38] it to create

[3:39] the most perfect nightmare or the most

[3:42] harmonious dream

[3:44] and it's ever-changing with every yes we

[3:46] give

[3:48] so to be impeccable with yourself

[3:52] to be impeccable with your intent to be

[3:54] impeccable with the word

[3:58] is simply to not use it to go against

[4:00] you

[4:01] to not use your word to domesticate

[4:04] yourself and domesticate

[4:05] others but to use it to

[4:08] heal yourself to love unconditionally

[4:12] and to create the work of art we want to

[4:16] live

[4:17] and experience and

[4:21] share

[4:24] be impeccable with yourself

[4:30] thank you

According to Ruiz Jr., the same life energy that animates your body and moves your limbs is the energy you use to create thoughts and speak words. When you say yes to something, you direct that intent toward manifesting it. Your word has power only because you—the living, conscious being—give it power through your intent.
Yes represents the moment you use your animating energy to manifest something; no represents the moment you choose not to use that energy. Both are equally powerful because they both express your will. For as long as you say no to something, it will not happen.
Not exactly. Being impeccable with your word means aligning your speech with your true intent, not using language to go against yourself or domesticate others. It's more about the energy and intention behind your words than about literal truthfulness.
When you repeatedly speak against yourself—affirming self-doubt, shame, or limitation through your internal dialogue and external speech—you use your word to limit your own power. Impeccable speech means using your word to heal yourself instead.
Yes, in the sense that every word you speak (especially your internal dialogue) directs your intent toward creating a particular life. Your words act as a focal point for the energy you animate. Speaking from clear, aligned intent literally changes the direction your life moves.
Words function as symbols that direct your life energy and creative intent in a specific direction. You can use them to create a harmonious dream or a perfect nightmare. Every yes you give through your words redirects your life's trajectory.
