[36:55] to tai and all of our ancestral teachers
[36:59] [Music]
[37:07] [Music]
[37:21] [Music]
[37:25] i am
[37:27] [Music]
[37:49] [Music]
[38:07] [Music]
[38:22] [Music]
[38:26] oh
[38:27] [Music]
[38:35] ah
[38:41] [Music]
[38:49] so in red we can see the polar bears for
[38:53] thai's casket
[38:55] getting ready to
[38:57] formally
[38:58] proceed
[39:00] towards the full moon meditation hall
[39:26] they're coming from the ancestral main
[39:29] shrine hall at two hill temple where
[39:31] they will have paid respect to the
[39:32] ancestors
[39:34] to seek their blessing to formally
[39:37] um come to
[39:41] participate in
[39:42] bringing ty's casket in the procession
[40:09] this
[40:13] so we have the
[40:15] formal
[40:16] procession
[40:18] taking shape
[40:21] at the front we have the bell of
[40:24] invitation the sound
[40:26] leading the procession
[40:29] we have the incense we have the memorial
[40:32] plaque for thai the dragon plaque being
[40:34] carried
[40:36] in golden red being carried by tyfab nim
[40:39] we have the photograph of thai
[40:42] we also have
[40:43] thais bow
[40:45] arms ball and his sangati
[40:48] so we will see
[40:50] all of these very precious
[40:53] and
[40:55] [Music]
[40:58] symbolic
[40:59] elements of thai's life
[41:02] are part of the head of the procession
[41:06] and
[41:07] these dharma instruments or elements
[41:14] and many of thai's
[41:16] disciples have been
[41:19] given the opportunity to do this
[41:21] [Music]
[41:23] is carrying
[41:25] the incense stick
[41:34] and now the procession uh is following
[41:38] the path around the grounds of to
[41:40] the path where tai has been enjoying
[41:44] the four seasons from his wheelchair
[41:53] over the last
[41:55] three and a half years
[42:04] and so now
[42:18] and we can see that the friends along
[42:20] the way are all holding
[42:23] white
[42:24] lotuses
[42:25] in honor of thai as a sign of
[42:28] freshness and also of mourning
[42:50] [Music]
[42:52] and we can hear the sound of the prajna
[42:55] bell in the background
[42:57] the prashnaya drums and the prashnya
[43:00] bells
[43:01] they will be invited in rounds
[43:04] the first round
[43:06] is the announcement of the dhamma
[43:09] festival the prashnya the inside
[43:11] festival
[43:14] with the second round it represents
[43:17] inviting all buddhas to be present
[43:22] and with the third round
[43:24] all sangha please listen
[43:27] as we offer our aspiration
[43:31] may all living beings hear the practical
[43:34] sound
[43:35] the sound of wisdom
[43:38] and may all phenomena enter into the
[43:41] prasanna realm
[43:43] the insight of highest wisdom
[44:03] so we're seeing this beautiful temple
[44:06] the root temple of a plum village
[44:08] tradition
[44:10] where thai has
[44:12] chosen to enjoy his
[44:15] last
[44:16] years
[44:18] i always used to say that the
[44:20] sound of the prashnya drums is like
[44:24] rolling thunder
[44:27] the sound of the dharma the sound of
[44:31] aspiration
[44:33] the sound of the
[44:35] true nature of reality
[44:42] here we are passing the
[44:44] half moon pond
[44:59] [Music]
[45:03] and here we can see the pallbearers
[45:05] getting ready to carry
[45:08] ty's casket
[45:15] covered with chrysanthemum flowers ty's
[45:18] favorite flower
[45:31] and ty's casket will appear in the
[45:34] middle of the procession
[45:38] and he is being led
[45:40] let out by the
[45:44] the bell by the flowers by the ancestors
[45:47] by the venerables and by his students
[45:59] to embark on this solemn journey
[46:14] hue in the center of vietnam is an
[46:17] ancient
[46:18] imperial city and many of the
[46:22] ceremonial elements we are seeing today
[46:26] emerge from this rich heritage of
[46:30] the city of hue which used to be the
[46:32] seat of the
[46:34] imperial rulers
[46:36] and
[46:39] so we are seeing
[46:40] timeless rituals continuing and being
[46:43] offered to our teacher for whom the
[46:46] ancestors and culture and the riches of
[46:50] vietnam vietnam were so important
[47:07] we have a chance here to see the grounds
[47:10] of tuhu temple
[47:13] the trees
[47:14] the pine trees as a child
[47:17] as a young novice thai would collect the
[47:20] pine needles
[47:22] to make a fire for his teacher in the
[47:24] early morning
[47:26] he would
[47:27] sit on the steps above this half moon
[47:30] pond
[47:31] to prepare fruit for his teacher or to
[47:34] enjoy the sound of the chanting coming
[47:36] from the shrine hall
[47:39] slightly above at the top of the steps
[47:41] in the center of the image we are seeing
[47:43] now
[47:46] the procession is
[47:50] coming around the half moon pond
[47:57] towards the gate of tukhyuu temple
[48:14] breathing in
[48:15] i know tai
[48:17] is embarking on a journey
[48:21] breathing out
[48:25] i smile to die
[48:28] in me
[48:29] and around me
[48:32] breathing in
[48:33] i generate the energy of peace for our
[48:36] teacher
[48:37] [Music]
[48:39] breathing out
[48:43] i generate the energy of peace for
[48:46] myself and for those around me
[49:28] here in plum village we are breathing
[49:30] silently
[49:36] breathing together with
[49:39] our global family
[49:42] in this very special moment as tai's
[49:44] casket is
[49:46] lifted
[49:52] and he begins his journey
[50:00] ty's younger brother here in yellow
[50:03] and gold at the front of the screen
[50:06] ensuring that everything is going
[50:07] smoothly
[50:19] thy students here in the image on the
[50:21] left
[50:24] ties
[50:25] young novices and big shoes and big
[50:28] sunnies and dharma teachers
[50:30] in the nuns community
[50:33] bearing witness
[50:34] paying their respect
[50:36] kneeling as thai's coughing
[50:38] tai's car's kid begins to move through
[50:41] the full moon meditation hall
[51:10] unity
[52:00] we're seeing the crowds assembled
[52:02] outside the full moon hall
[52:07] people have traveled from all over the
[52:09] country to be here to bear witness to
[52:12] this very holy moment
[52:18] we can hear the sound of the drum in the
[52:21] background
[52:23] the prajna drum
[52:26] resonating
[52:27] [Music]
[52:29] in the historical and the ultimate
[52:31] dimension
[53:20] so the cascade now is being
[53:22] both
[53:26] positioned so it can be carried
[54:02] breathing in we feel grateful to
[54:05] all the cameramen all the technical
[54:07] folks who have been working for many
[54:10] days
[54:11] to make these images possible for us
[54:17] breathing out we release any
[54:20] tension or frustration
[54:39] tai's younger dhamma brother here
[54:41] ensuring
[54:43] that everything
[54:45] is handled well
[54:48] a gift for his elder brother
[54:59] it's wonderful as a global community
[55:03] to have this chance to visit thai's root
[55:07] temple
[55:08] to hear in hue
[55:10] tai wanted all of his students to have
[55:13] the chance to go
[55:15] back to
[55:16] to visit
[55:18] and whenever any of us did have the
[55:21] chance to go there when we came back
[55:24] they would always ask us
[55:26] if we had seen the half moon pond
[55:29] if we had tasted
[55:32] the
[55:33] sweet star fruit
[55:36] of the tree behind the ancestors hall
[55:40] if we had climbed fungswoon hill
[55:43] which he climbed as a novice
[55:52] today with this possession
[55:55] we all have a chance
[55:58] to visit
[56:00] these places which were so sacred and
[56:03] precious today
[56:08] [Music]
[56:30] temple is very important
[56:33] in the
[56:35] zen lineage in vietnam many zen masters
[56:38] have
[56:39] risen up from this land
[56:42] have practiced
[56:44] on these temple grounds
[56:53] and as ty's casket is processed around
[56:56] the grounds
[56:58] we know that tai
[56:59] is not caught
[57:01] in the idea of
[57:03] the thai is limited to this body
[57:07] and i will always be present
[57:10] into you
[57:12] in the pine trees
[57:14] the huffman pond
[57:17] the star fruit tree
[57:19] he loved so much
[57:21] the sounds of the bells and the drums
[57:25] and in the practice
[57:30] of the brothers and the sisters
[57:32] and all the friends
[57:48] [Music]
[57:54] i'm done
[58:03] [Music]
[59:02] hey
[59:13] um
[59:51] [Music]
[59:58] foreign
[1:00:25] memphis
[1:00:30] [Music]
[1:00:39] [Music]
[1:01:20] so the shafts have now been fitted
[1:01:24] and the procession is on its way we can
[1:01:27] see
[1:01:28] right back to the
[1:01:30] end of this path
[1:01:35] we can see our brothers have the honor
[1:01:37] of holding the parasol over ty's casket
[1:01:43] as the procession begins to make its way
[1:02:18] foreign
[1:02:26] so here the head of the procession is
[1:02:28] waiting in front so already outside the
[1:02:30] gate
[1:02:34] to announce
[1:02:38] that the procession can emerge here we
[1:02:41] are the half moon pond on our left
[1:02:44] and thai
[1:02:46] will pass by
[1:02:48] the
[1:02:49] distinctive gate of thuhu temple
[1:02:54] the gate of the three doors of
[1:02:56] liberation
[1:03:02] emptiness
[1:03:06] aimlessness and sinlessness
[1:03:28] there's a place close to the half moon
[1:03:31] pond here where thai used to wash his
[1:03:33] feet after coming back from taking care
[1:03:36] of the buffaloes out in the rice paddies
[1:03:41] just very close to where his coffin is
[1:03:43] passing now
[1:04:10] whenever any of us had the chance to
[1:04:13] visit to you
[1:04:15] they would ask us if we had practiced
[1:04:18] walking meditation in the grounds
[1:04:20] if we had practiced walking meditation
[1:04:23] around the half moon pond
[1:04:26] and i
[1:04:28] wanted all of us to bring the practice
[1:04:31] of walking meditation back
[1:04:33] to you
[1:04:35] and he said that anyone
[1:04:39] any uh anyone who saw us into you should
[1:04:42] know that we were from plum village
[1:04:44] right away
[1:04:48] and so ty's disciples our beloved
[1:04:51] monastic community in the plum village
[1:04:53] tradition are those with brown
[1:04:54] underneath the golden robes
[1:04:56] and those with gray robes represent
[1:05:00] other traditions or golden robes
[1:05:03] represent many other traditions of
[1:05:05] buddhism in vietnam
[1:05:22] [Music]
[1:05:29] uh
[1:05:41] hello
[1:05:54] everything's done
[1:06:12] at the head they are already
[1:06:15] on the main street
[1:06:16] outside of the root temple
[1:06:19] [Music]
[1:06:23] and on the right is the yung sung hill
[1:06:27] the famous hilda tay
[1:06:30] shared a lot in different poems as a
[1:06:32] young monk he would climb the hill
[1:06:37] here we are seeing the main gate of two
[1:06:40] temples
[1:06:47] [Music]
[1:06:50] uh
[1:07:06] they are now carrying ty's casket
[1:07:09] through
[1:07:11] the gate of the pagoda
[1:07:26] and
[1:07:27] they are carrying tight through the main
[1:07:30] gate of the three
[1:07:31] [Music]
[1:07:33] three doors of liberation gate
[1:07:37] [Music]
[1:07:59] computers
[1:08:01] [Music]
[1:08:17] this central gate is opened only on very
[1:08:21] special occasions
[1:08:24] either for members
[1:08:27] and for members of the royal family in
[1:08:29] the past
[1:08:31] and when they returned
[1:08:34] to
[1:08:36] temple after so many years in 2005
[1:08:39] and also when they
[1:08:41] arrived
[1:08:42] in
[1:08:44] 2018
[1:08:47] no one else is allowed to pass through
[1:08:49] the central gate in this way
[1:08:53] [Music]
[1:09:19] [Music]
[1:09:28] how wonderful that ty can be honored
[1:09:31] with these
[1:09:32] traditional rights from his homeland
[1:09:36] these very sacred
[1:09:39] rituals that we are witnessing here
[1:09:42] the rituals of our
[1:09:43] ancestors in vietnam our spiritual and
[1:09:46] land ancestors in vietnam
[1:09:54] and it's so wonderful
[1:09:56] that so many people have been allowed
[1:09:58] together to pay their respects
[1:10:01] even in this time of pandemic it's a
[1:10:03] great gift
[1:10:05] that the government has made possible
[1:10:07] for us and we're deeply grateful
[1:10:09] and we know that retay
[1:10:12] community
[1:10:13] brotherhood and sisterhood for
[1:10:16] people to gather
[1:10:18] is hugely important and what a gift that
[1:10:20] people can gather on this occasion
[1:10:24] [Music]
[1:10:30] honor of the good the true and the
[1:10:32] beautiful
[1:10:44] [Music]
[1:10:54] we can see the
[1:10:56] practitioners touching the earth as
[1:10:57] tai's cascade passes by those who are
[1:11:00] wearing grey robes is a sign of respect
[1:11:03] when visiting the temple to wear the
[1:11:05] grey outrank
[1:11:06] so these are regular people but who have
[1:11:08] a deep
[1:11:10] practice and respect for thai
[1:11:14] [Music]
[1:11:38] [Music]
[1:11:45] [Music]
[1:11:50] me
[1:11:53] [Music]
[1:12:00] so
[1:12:06] [Music]
[1:12:13] so
[1:12:23] we can see sako chan kong
[1:12:26] at the head of the
[1:12:30] nuns community
[1:12:32] following behind
[1:12:33] ty's casket
[1:12:35] how wonderful that she can be here in
[1:12:38] this moment
[1:12:57] so
[1:12:59] [Music]
[1:13:14] so
[1:13:15] [Music]
[1:13:19] so
[1:13:23] [Music]
[1:13:31] [Music]
[1:13:39] [Music]
[1:13:41] do
[1:13:42] [Music]
[1:13:49] [Music]
[1:14:08] [Music]
[1:14:15] [Music]
[1:14:27] [Music]
[1:14:35] [Music]
[1:14:44] [Music]
[1:14:54] foreign
[1:14:56] [Music]
[1:15:12] [Music]
[1:15:19] [Music]
[1:15:29] so
[1:15:35] [Music]
[1:15:38] so
[1:16:09] so
[1:16:22] so
[1:16:26] [Music]
[1:16:52] [Music]
[1:17:07] [Music]
[1:17:16] i
[1:17:23] [Music]
[1:17:41] so
[1:17:45] [Music]
[1:18:03] so
[1:18:07] [Music]
[1:18:20] the music we're hearing
[1:18:23] is the melody of a song it's one of ty's
[1:18:26] favorite songs
[1:18:28] written by
[1:18:30] one of the sisters
[1:18:32] sister yanu
[1:18:35] and whenever we gathered as a sangha
[1:18:37] taiwanese asked us to sing this song
[1:18:42] [Music]
[1:18:47] in gratitude
[1:18:50] you have wanted seeds of love in me in
[1:18:54] gratitude
[1:18:56] i have a water seeds of love in someone
[1:18:59] too
[1:19:01] [Music]
[1:19:15] and now we hear the melody
[1:19:17] here is the pure land the pure land is
[1:19:20] here
[1:19:21] and this was a practice that i offered
[1:19:24] to us
[1:19:26] to see that this beautiful planet is the
[1:19:29] pure land
[1:19:31] we just have to invite the energy of
[1:19:34] mindfulness to be present
[1:19:37] and we can be in touch with all the
[1:19:39] wonders of life
[1:19:41] the beautiful bamboos the green trees
[1:19:45] the blue sky
[1:19:48] and in this solar moment
[1:19:51] as tight
[1:19:53] is present
[1:19:55] we all get to
[1:19:56] be in the pure land
[1:19:59] for thai
[1:20:01] [Music]
[1:20:04] i always said that the pure land is here
[1:20:08] and now
[1:20:09] it is not somewhere far away
[1:20:15] [Music]
[1:20:26] [Music]
[1:20:34] [Music]
[1:20:41] [Music]
[1:20:49] the lay friends have arrived very early
[1:20:53] to be present to have an opportunity
[1:20:56] to bow
[1:20:57] to tithe
[1:20:59] to pay their deepest respect
[1:21:20] [Music]
[1:21:23] me
[1:21:25] [Music]
[1:21:31] [Music]
[1:21:47] so
[1:21:49] [Music]
[1:21:57] [Music]
[1:22:00] as we
[1:22:02] continue to follow our breathing
[1:22:04] witnessing
[1:22:06] these extraordinary images
[1:22:10] know that this is truly a legendary
[1:22:13] moment
[1:22:15] [Music]
[1:22:19] a monk who cherished so much simplicity
[1:22:24] and humidity
[1:22:26] to be honored in this way
[1:22:28] [Music]
[1:22:30] by so many
[1:22:32] as an outpouring of gratitude and love
[1:22:36] [Music]
[1:22:42] [Music]
[1:22:53] it's only now that we can see
[1:22:56] we can start to see
[1:22:59] how profoundly
[1:23:01] has touched the world
[1:23:03] the hearts of so many people
[1:23:08] and so many people
[1:23:10] want to express
[1:23:12] their gratitude and their love
[1:23:14] their respect
[1:23:16] in this way they want to honor tay
[1:23:19] in this powerful way
[1:23:48] the procession is continuing
[1:23:51] along the road towards the city of way
[1:24:00] so in this procession
[1:24:04] we have
[1:24:05] many of
[1:24:06] thai's most senior monastic disciples
[1:24:10] not only sister chan kong and many of
[1:24:13] our eldest and beloved
[1:24:15] nuns in our plum village community
[1:24:18] but also on the monk side
[1:24:21] we have taipa
[1:24:24] um
[1:24:25] [Music]
[1:24:26] hi who has traveled from australia we
[1:24:29] can see taipa bang here carrying the
[1:24:32] incense
[1:24:33] stick representing all our ancestors
[1:24:37] and he is followed by thai fab neem
[1:24:40] holding the dragon plaque
[1:24:43] great honor and an imperial tradition
[1:24:46] from hawaii
[1:24:47] and from our school of buddhism
[1:24:50] and we have thai's picture
[1:24:53] being carried by taifab hoy and taifa
[1:24:56] koi
[1:25:02] and we have
[1:25:05] brother blue carrying his arms ball and
[1:25:08] taifa pai from australia carrying his
[1:25:12] sanghati
[1:25:17] the arms bowl and the sanghati are
[1:25:20] considered the two wings of a monastic
[1:25:24] we should never be without our golden
[1:25:27] sangati robe or our very simple
[1:25:31] arms bowl
[1:25:52] uh
[1:25:58] and the traditions
[1:26:00] that we are seeing here many of them
[1:26:02] ancient and the symbolism of the
[1:26:04] sanghati robe and the arms bowl date
[1:26:07] back to the time of the buddha
[1:26:12] and
[1:26:15] the sanghati robes
[1:26:18] are a kind of patchwork symbolizing the
[1:26:21] field
[1:26:23] of all good seeds
[1:26:24] as though like it's a patchwork of rice
[1:26:26] paddies so when we see the back of the
[1:26:29] golden sangati robes we can see the the
[1:26:32] patchwork
[1:26:36] and the bowl itself represents humility
[1:26:40] and the deep wish to be in touch with
[1:26:41] lay people in order to be able to share
[1:26:44] the dharma
[1:26:53] and here the procession is emerging into
[1:26:57] the streets of hue
[1:27:12] and i have no doubt that ty's disciples
[1:27:15] in the procession
[1:27:16] are following their breathing
[1:27:19] enjoying
[1:27:19] [Music]
[1:27:21] each step
[1:27:23] each legendary step on this journey
[1:27:26] an opportunity to show our
[1:27:29] respect gratitude and love for our
[1:27:31] teacher and to honor him
[1:27:48] okay
[1:29:04] so
[1:30:44] and we're seeing on the left
[1:30:46] the cars and the funeral cottage
[1:30:52] which are also
[1:30:54] adorned with chrysanthemums
[1:30:59] the whole procession will travel by car
[1:31:02] to the cremation ground
[1:31:06] in the paradise garden
[1:31:08] in the eternity park
[1:31:11] in way
[1:32:07] foreign
[1:32:44] uh
[1:33:03] now the head of the procession have
[1:33:05] arrived at other vehicles and they are
[1:33:08] organizing themselves
[1:33:09] to get into the vehicles in order to
[1:33:13] go to the paradise garden
[1:34:16] oh
[1:34:42] uh
[1:34:56] foreign
[1:35:31] um
[1:35:48] oh
[1:36:04] foreign
[1:36:42] it seems like they have already put
[1:36:44] thai's casket onto the car
[1:37:15] [Music]
[1:37:19] i
[1:37:47] is
[1:37:53] this
[1:37:58] [Music]
[1:38:02] uh
[1:38:16] we can
[1:38:20] we can see ty's calligraphy at the back
[1:38:22] of the car a clown
[1:38:52] to arrive at the park
[1:38:55] where the ceremony will continue
[1:38:57] the sangha in plum village is touching
[1:38:59] the earth three times
[1:39:01] to express our deep gratitude and
[1:39:04] profound love
[1:39:05] to our teachers and master technical
[1:39:11] [Music]
[1:40:14] so
[1:41:37] um
[1:41:51] [Music]
[1:41:54] so in plum village we shall now have a
[1:41:56] break it is 1 40 a.m
[1:41:59] so the monastic brothers and sisters and
[1:42:01] they friends who are here
[1:42:03] are invited to
[1:42:06] can go for walks outside or take a
[1:42:09] rest
[1:42:11] or if we like we can continue to do
[1:42:13] sitting meditation in plum village in
[1:42:16] the meditation hall
[1:42:18] and we can still see the car the live
[1:42:21] stream of the vehicles on this way
[1:42:25] the cortes going towards a
[1:42:28] paradise garden
[1:42:30] where
[1:42:31] the cremation ceremony will happen
[1:42:35] now the cars have already begun their
[1:42:38] possession
[1:42:57] um
[1:43:25] our elder brother in plum village is
[1:43:27] inviting everyone to continue to
[1:43:29] practice noble silence during this time
[1:43:33] until we
[1:43:34] see the vehicles arriving at the park
[1:43:37] for us to join in the cremation ceremony
[1:43:40] with the
[1:43:42] monastic brothers and sisters
[1:43:44] in hui vietnam
[1:43:58] we see that the streets are aligned on
[1:44:00] both sides with
[1:44:02] thousands of people
[1:44:05] who have come to
[1:44:07] bear witness
[1:44:09] and to
[1:44:11] show their respect
[1:44:13] and love for
[1:44:16] one of ways most beloved sons
[1:44:19] thank you
[1:44:20] to everyone who has followed so far
[1:44:22] online
[1:44:24] it is wonderful to bear witness in this
[1:44:26] way together
[1:44:28] as a global thank you and to know
[1:44:30] that we are connected
[1:44:32] in these sacred moments by our love
[1:44:35] and our gratitude for dying
[1:44:54] so
[1:45:19] so
[1:45:50] so
[1:46:07] so
[1:47:27] so

[2:23:24] so
[2:24:31] so here we are the funeral courtesy has
[2:24:34] arrived now
[2:24:36] at the paradise garden
[2:24:40] in the vinhang park
[2:24:43] in hawaii
[2:24:45] and
[2:24:46] this
[2:24:47] park this garden will become a memorial
[2:24:50] park
[2:24:52] a place to come and practice walking
[2:24:54] meditation in ties memory
[2:24:58] a place of beauty and a place of peace
[2:25:02] and that's why it has the name
[2:25:04] [Music]
[2:25:05] paradise garden
[2:25:08] [Music]
[2:25:10] where we can all touch the pure land
[2:25:13] in every step and in every breath
[2:25:17] just as we would practice while walking
[2:25:19] through the
[2:25:20] fields and forests here in france
[2:25:23] we will all have a chance to practice
[2:25:26] walking meditation
[2:25:28] here in the pureland garden
[2:25:31] in this park
[2:25:33] but for now the
[2:25:35] cortege procession continues its way
[2:25:38] so here at the front we see the incense
[2:25:41] being carried the incense being the
[2:25:43] symbol
[2:25:44] of the ancestors and always the
[2:25:46] ancestors
[2:25:48] lead the procession
[2:25:50] and then uh that is followed
[2:25:53] by the
[2:25:56] uh memorial plaque
[2:25:58] and
[2:25:59] this car that we're seeing now is the
[2:26:00] car carrying the memorial
[2:26:03] this car carrying the casket with our
[2:26:06] brothers accompanying thai and ahead of
[2:26:08] them is the car carrying thai's sangati
[2:26:11] and his ball
[2:26:14] and we also have the car with
[2:26:16] thai's image tai's picture so all of
[2:26:19] these very symbolic
[2:26:22] elements of thai's life
[2:26:26] and hear the procession
[2:26:28] reforming
[2:27:02] and here in plum village france in the
[2:27:04] upper hammock the great temple bell is
[2:27:07] also sounding
[2:27:09] toback the solemn occasion of the
[2:27:11] arrival of thai's casket
[2:27:14] here to the cremation grounds
[2:27:33] no being no non-being is the calligraphy
[2:27:37] brother fabloo here brother stream
[2:27:39] carrying ties robe and sangati
[2:27:43] brother stream is an american monk who
[2:27:45] has traveled from the apoc monastery to
[2:27:48] be present to participate in the
[2:27:50] ceremonies today
[2:27:53] and all of the brothers who are holding
[2:27:55] the paracel and the dharma instruments
[2:27:58] have been thai's attendant for the last
[2:28:00] four years
[2:28:02] since
[2:28:03] we have typhob koi
[2:28:05] and thai fabhoi
[2:28:08] carrying tai's image thai's picture
[2:28:13] two beloved monks in our tradition
[2:28:16] [Music]
[2:28:17] elder father figures in our community
[2:28:20] brother coy at blue cliff monastery in
[2:28:23] new york and taipa boy
[2:28:26] monastery in california
[2:28:31] we have
[2:28:31] they are members of our community who
[2:28:33] have studied and practiced directly with
[2:28:36] thai
[2:28:37] for many many years originally here in
[2:28:40] plum village before being sent to
[2:28:42] established practice centers
[2:28:45] in other parts of the world
[2:28:47] and such an honor for them that they can
[2:28:50] be here and the venerables are arriving
[2:28:53] in the
[2:28:54] cars here to also take their positions
[2:28:58] in the ceremony
[2:29:02] i've had name here carrying the dragon
[2:29:05] plaque
[2:29:06] which bears
[2:29:07] ties
[2:29:09] thai's title as we read at the beginning
[2:29:11] of the ceremony today
[2:29:13] is tai's official formal title
[2:29:27] tai belongs to the 42nd generation of
[2:29:30] the linchi jana school
[2:29:32] the eighth generation of the neoquan
[2:29:35] dharma line
[2:29:36] he is patriarch and abbott of the two
[2:29:39] hue lineage
[2:29:40] he is founder of the international from
[2:29:43] village dharma school
[2:29:45] his first name is trung and his second
[2:29:47] name is quank
[2:29:48] and his lineage name is fung swang
[2:29:51] his dharma title is zen master
[2:29:56] and his family name is
[2:29:58] awakened venerable
[2:30:00] here taifa boon
[2:30:01] carrying the incense
[2:30:05] the incense representing our connection
[2:30:08] to our ancestors and as many of us know
[2:30:10] in the thumbvillage tradition our
[2:30:12] connection to our ancestors is deeply
[2:30:15] important
[2:30:16] just as it is in
[2:30:19] the ancient
[2:30:20] and traditions cultural traditions of
[2:30:22] vietnam
[2:30:31] and now the procession has begun as they
[2:30:34] make their way to the cremation site
[2:30:38] which has been built in the last few
[2:30:40] days just for
[2:30:42] dice cremation
[2:31:47] the procession needs to wait for the
[2:31:49] other monastics to arrive
[2:31:51] before they continue
[2:32:06] oh
[2:32:10] [Music]
[2:32:13] so here we are we're seeing the
[2:32:15] crematory for the first time
[2:32:16] [Music]
[2:32:18] uh
[2:32:19] especially for a thai today
[2:32:22] and the
[2:32:24] canopy in the gold the saffron yellow of
[2:32:27] the sangati robe
[2:32:29] providing some much needed shade for
[2:32:31] everyone today
[2:32:33] and
[2:32:34] in front of the cremation you see the
[2:32:37] flowers
[2:32:39] that has been put together by the monks
[2:32:41] and nuns of thai student
[2:32:44] and is this logo of plum village
[2:32:53] the one pillar temple in the lotus
[2:32:55] flower
[2:32:57] smarty samari and prashnya mindfulness
[2:33:01] concentration and insight
[2:33:19] wow
[2:33:41] in this special occasion to pay respect
[2:33:44] to
[2:33:45] a zen master such as thai monks and nuns
[2:33:48] from all over vietnam have
[2:33:50] gathered
[2:34:07] so the ceremony is being led by
[2:34:11] venerables nominated from other
[2:34:13] traditions in vietnam
[2:34:15] and tai's own disciples
[2:34:18] the vietnamese buddhist sangha and
[2:34:20] thai's disciples in our plum village
[2:34:22] community we are the ones wearing brown
[2:34:25] that begin after the the flowers in this
[2:34:28] procession
[2:34:34] and we are very blessed to have such
[2:34:36] sunny weather today in hue huay is known
[2:34:40] for its changeable weather
[2:34:57] hear the ceremony procession is
[2:34:59] beginning
[2:35:05] a week of rain is forecast in vietnam
[2:35:08] maybe from tomorrow or the day after so
[2:35:10] very auspicious to have the sunshine
[2:35:12] today and
[2:35:13] what we
[2:35:14] traditionally call the rain of tears
[2:35:18] in the coming week
[2:35:28] and after thai's requiem masses that he
[2:35:32] offered in 2008 in the
[2:35:35] north center and in 2007 in the north
[2:35:38] centre and south of vietnam there were
[2:35:40] also auspicious rains
[2:35:44] so today we are enjoying auspicious
[2:35:47] sunshine
[2:36:17] so
[2:36:26] uh
[2:36:42] thank you
[2:36:55] the mind can go
[2:36:57] in a thousand directions
[2:37:00] but on this lovely path
[2:37:03] i walk in peace
[2:37:06] with each step
[2:37:09] a gentle breeze blows
[2:37:13] with each step
[2:37:16] from the calcium
[2:37:29] [Music]
[2:38:20] so some dignitaries um have arrived
[2:38:23] seated on the right uh representatives
[2:38:26] also from the us embassy
[2:38:29] and
[2:38:31] last night vietnam time now it's early
[2:38:33] morning in vietnam and
[2:38:36] earlier today if we're in america or
[2:38:39] europe
[2:38:40] there was another ceremony in vietnam
[2:38:42] with a very beautiful testimony from a
[2:38:45] representative from the u.s embassy
[2:38:49] so please uh you can find this uh
[2:38:52] the clip of his
[2:38:53] tribute to thai it's very moving
[2:38:57] and
[2:39:01] [Music]
[2:39:10] and thomas lyons the representative of
[2:39:12] the u.s embassy
[2:39:13] recalled how thai called dr martin
[2:39:16] luther king of bodhisattva
[2:39:19] and in return
[2:39:20] dr king called pai
[2:39:22] an apostle apostle of peace and
[2:39:26] non-violence
[2:39:28] and the representative said that perhaps
[2:39:30] also
[2:39:31] a word to describe tai
[2:39:34] is prophet
[2:39:37] someone who is so prescient and who has
[2:39:39] so much to offer the world who sees so
[2:39:41] deeply what the world needs
[2:39:43] and we know that what thai has offered
[2:39:45] the world
[2:39:47] will continue to be offered the
[2:39:49] teachings the practice the wisdom the
[2:39:51] insights and the community that carries
[2:39:54] tie into the future
[2:39:57] nothing is lost only transformed
[2:40:01] [Music]
[2:40:24] [Music]
[2:40:36] ah
[2:40:48] please
[2:41:04] [Music]
[2:41:30] um
[2:41:38] [Music]
[2:41:53] so for those who may be just joining us
[2:41:56] we the funeral cotes procession has
[2:41:59] arrived
[2:42:01] at the cremation grounds just outside
[2:42:04] hue
[2:42:05] known as paradise garden or pure land
[2:42:08] garden
[2:42:10] in the vinhang park
[2:42:12] and this will become a sacred land after
[2:42:14] the cremation today
[2:42:16] and we have a special canopy erected
[2:42:19] here in the gold
[2:42:21] of the buddhist sanghatti robes and the
[2:42:24] procession has traveled here we see
[2:42:26] tai's casket being carried by the
[2:42:29] pallbearers
[2:42:31] adorned with chrysanthemum flowers
[2:42:37] followed by thai's monastic disciples
[2:42:43] and at the front of the procession we
[2:42:45] have
[2:42:46] the incense
[2:42:49] thai's plaque memorial plaque
[2:42:52] we have his sangati robe his arms ball
[2:42:55] [Music]
[2:42:58] we also have his
[2:43:00] official picture his likeness his image
[2:43:03] and following the
[2:43:07] cascade we have the plum village
[2:43:09] community of monks and nuns who have
[2:43:12] gathered not just from around vietnam
[2:43:14] but many elders have also flown in from
[2:43:17] around the world to participate in this
[2:43:20] ceremony and represent their communities
[2:43:24] each
[2:43:35] okay we have venerable lake trang uh
[2:43:39] senior monk who has come to visit us in
[2:43:41] plum village and train us in the
[2:43:43] um very profound arts of vietnamese
[2:43:46] chanting
[2:43:48] and he assisted in the great requiem
[2:43:50] ceremonies that thai led in vietnam for
[2:43:53] the healing of all the wounds of all the
[2:43:55] wars
[2:43:57] and
[2:43:58] it's wonderful that he can be present
[2:44:00] today also to
[2:44:02] lend his spiritual support to this
[2:44:04] ceremony
[2:44:07] so here the cascade is arriving to the
[2:44:09] crematory
[2:44:16] which has been specially built for this
[2:44:19] occasion with the white lotuses adorning
[2:44:21] it
[2:44:23] and the chrysanthemums
[2:44:48] [Music]
[2:45:06] dear sangha please return to our
[2:45:08] breathing
[2:45:09] as the casket
[2:45:11] is being prepared to put to be put into
[2:45:16] the crematorium
[2:45:46] okay

[2:47:27] now
[2:48:45] [Music]
[2:49:09] the venerable monks are beginning to
[2:49:12] chant
[2:49:16] the sangha in plum village
[2:49:19] is all now standing up
[2:49:21] to touch the earth three times deeply
[2:49:24] to express our gratitude
[2:49:27] to our teacher

[2:49:33] the plum village international dharma

[2:52:55] venables are bringing
[2:52:58] the flame
[2:52:59] which has been burning
[2:53:01] on the buddha altar
[2:53:02] [Music]
[2:53:04] to start
[2:53:07] the
[2:53:09] the fire
[2:53:11] for the cremation

[2:53:14] palms
[2:53:18] and bring your mind
[2:53:19] your body together
[2:53:22] with your mindful breathing
[2:53:25] to be fully present

[2:57:57] mind
[2:57:59] since before time
[2:58:01] i have been free
[2:58:03] birth and death are only doors through
[2:58:06] which we pass
[2:58:08] sacred threshold on our journey
[2:58:12] birth and death are a game of hide and

[2:59:29] following our breathing
[2:59:32] generating the energy of mindfulness
[2:59:35] peace
[2:59:36] and compassion for our teacher
[2:59:40] and
[2:59:41] in these quiet moments
[2:59:43] this is also a chance as we
[2:59:46] um
[2:59:50] await the
[2:59:52] signal to restart from vietnam we can
[2:59:54] also
[2:59:55] follow our breathing
[2:59:58] and
[2:59:59] really
[3:00:02] arrive into this moment
[3:00:05] touching in our own heart
[3:00:09] what tai has meant to us
[3:00:13] the transformations he has brought us
[3:00:17] the teachings he has offered us
[3:00:27] to touch what he has meant in our life
[3:00:31] and how we
[3:00:32] wish to carry him forward into the
[3:00:35] future to carry
[3:00:37] this energy of mindfulness peace and
[3:00:40] compassion into the future
[3:02:32] we will read a poem by tai please call
[3:02:35] me by my true names
[3:02:39] don't say that i will depart tomorrow
[3:02:43] even today
[3:02:45] i am still arriving
[3:02:48] look deeply
[3:02:50] every second i am arriving
[3:02:53] [Music]
[3:02:54] to be a bad on a spring branch
[3:02:58] to be a tiny bird
[3:03:00] with still fragile wings
[3:03:03] learning to sing in my new nest
[3:03:13] [Music]
[3:03:18] we return to the
[3:03:20] cremation grounds
[3:03:22] and the
[3:03:23] crematory
[3:03:25] and the cascade has been placed inside
[3:03:28] the crematory and is now being sealed
[3:03:33] and
[3:03:35] when this is when this is complete
[3:03:38] we will
[3:03:39] listen to chanting
[3:03:41] and a ceremony
[3:03:49] is reading this text which we will now
[3:03:51] read in english for you to follow
[3:03:55] respected venerables brothers sisters
[3:03:58] and friends
[3:04:00] in this moment
[3:04:02] each one of us is embracing the loss of
[3:04:04] tai
[3:04:05] in our own unique way to us his
[3:04:09] disciples
[3:04:11] play is a teacher
[3:04:13] who we dearly love
[3:04:15] respect and always take refuge in
[3:04:18] even those of us
[3:04:35] even those of us who have been
[3:04:38] by thai's side for many years we still
[3:04:41] feel like a child a young
[3:04:43] innocent and often unskillful novice
[3:04:46] in more than 60 years of practicing and
[3:04:49] teaching the dharma at key moments tai
[3:04:52] would usually write a letter or a poem
[3:04:54] to encourage or support his disciples
[3:04:57] in this solomon sacred moment of the
[3:04:59] cremation ceremony
[3:05:01] our wish is to receive such a letter
[3:05:04] from tay
[3:05:05] while preparing for tai's funeral
[3:05:08] we read through the old letters tai had
[3:05:10] written
[3:05:11] full of love and care for his disciples
[3:05:16] throughout his whole life
[3:05:19] tai never stopped transmitting the
[3:05:22] dharma
[3:05:24] these dharma gems
[3:05:26] are as majestic as jeweled mountains
[3:05:31] as deep and wondrous
[3:05:33] as the vast ocean
[3:05:36] in 2020 on the occasion of commemorating
[3:05:40] our ancestral teacher master nicklin
[3:05:43] we asked tai for permission to select
[3:05:45] some gems from his old letters
[3:05:48] and compose one just like the ones he
[3:05:50] used to write for us
[3:05:51] in the past 60 years
[3:05:54] may this letter a garland of dharma gems
[3:05:57] be a torch
[3:05:58] that shines and helps us to overcome our
[3:06:02] most difficult times
[3:06:05] today when our collective consciousness
[3:06:07] and the sacred flame of the cremation
[3:06:09] ceremony
[3:06:10] are infused
[3:06:12] into the realm of no birth and no death
[3:06:14] we humbly ask the most respected
[3:06:17] venerables
[3:06:18] our brothers and sisters and friends
[3:06:21] from all over the world
[3:06:23] to allow us to offer tai this garland of
[3:06:26] gems
[3:06:27] a letter to all his disciples to his
[3:06:30] continuation
[3:06:48] climbing together the hill
[3:06:51] of the century
[3:06:53] to all my beloved children
[3:06:56] monastic
[3:06:57] the order of into being
[3:06:59] and lay practitioners near and far
[3:07:03] today is the memorial day
[3:07:05] of the ancestral teacher who founded the
[3:07:09] our root temple
[3:07:11] his first name is dan and his second
[3:07:13] name is tian
[3:07:14] but he also is known by the name
[3:07:20] today it is sunny
[3:07:22] and in the freshness of ways mid-autumn
[3:07:25] thousands of descendants of our
[3:07:26] ancestral teacher
[3:07:28] from all over the country have returned
[3:07:30] to the root temple
[3:07:32] in order to pay respect to him
[3:07:34] in the previous days hundreds of people
[3:07:37] have also been visiting the root temple
[3:07:40] to rake the leaves
[3:07:42] to tidy up the garden of the monastery
[3:07:44] to clean up the stupas and prepare for
[3:07:46] today's ceremony
[3:07:48] the descendants of our ancestral teacher
[3:07:50] all over the world are also turning
[3:07:52] towards him
[3:07:54] during this day of his memorial
[3:07:57] asanga is vast
[3:07:59] and it is present in all the five
[3:08:01] continents
[3:08:02] tai is so happy to see that asanga is
[3:08:05] continuing
[3:08:06] the career of the buddha and of our
[3:08:09] spiritual ancestors
[3:08:20] tai has often taught
[3:08:23] that with gratitude in our hearts we can
[3:08:25] be happy right away
[3:08:28] in the past few days
[3:08:30] tai has so much gratitude
[3:08:33] for the buddha
[3:08:34] and spiritual ancestors
[3:08:37] for offering such a beautiful and clear
[3:08:39] spiritual path
[3:08:42] a path for us to go on for our whole
[3:08:45] life
[3:08:48] vietnam
[3:08:49] is a very beautiful country
[3:08:51] with beautiful people
[3:08:54] i am so grateful to the country of
[3:08:56] vietnam
[3:08:58] and to my blood family
[3:09:00] for having given birth to me
[3:09:03] two years ago this country once again
[3:09:06] opened her arms
[3:09:07] and welcomed me
[3:09:09] to return
[3:09:10] to teach the dharma in the place that i
[3:09:13] was born
[3:09:15] in the past two years
[3:09:18] i have been so happy
[3:09:20] living with my brothers
[3:09:22] my sisters
[3:09:24] and disciples
[3:09:25] on this my ancestral land
[3:09:29] i often visit the room of my teacher
[3:09:33] or do walking meditation around the half
[3:09:35] moon pond
[3:09:37] together with my young disciples
[3:09:39] where some nights we watch the moon rise
[3:09:42] over the gate of the monastery
[3:09:45] the path from the main hall of duhu
[3:09:48] which leads down to the half moon pond
[3:09:51] around morningstar pond
[3:09:54] and up the yunswan hill
[3:09:56] or back to langvien
[3:09:58] has already become a legendary path
[3:10:04] do you know that my happiness is very
[3:10:07] great
[3:10:08] sometimes it is so immense that i have
[3:10:11] the feeling that i cannot embrace it all
[3:10:15] whenever i see my students attending me
[3:10:18] my heart is filled with love and
[3:10:20] gratitude
[3:10:22] i am deeply grateful for all my students
[3:10:26] i think that our sangha should renew the
[3:10:28] practice of the four gratitudes
[3:10:32] before gratitude towards our parents
[3:10:34] our teachers our friends and all living
[3:10:38] beings
[3:10:41] we should renew this practice to make it
[3:10:43] the five gratitudes and in it we can add
[3:10:46] gratitude
[3:10:48] not only for our parents our teachers
[3:10:50] and friends and the living beings but
[3:10:52] also
[3:10:53] for our descendants our disciples
[3:10:56] this can include monastics members of
[3:10:58] the order of interbeing
[3:11:00] and lay practitioners who have helped
[3:11:03] and the spiritual ancestors to realize
[3:11:05] the work
[3:11:06] of spreading the dharma
[3:11:08] and helping all living beings
[3:11:11] [Music]
[3:11:14] not only have my attendance brought me
[3:11:18] so much happiness but all of you
[3:11:20] wherever you are and whatever you are
[3:11:23] doing to transform suffering within
[3:11:25] yourselves
[3:11:27] and others
[3:11:28] whatever you are doing to engage and
[3:11:30] offer your services to humanity
[3:11:33] each and every one of you has offered me
[3:11:35] and continues to offer me
[3:11:37] so much happiness
[3:11:40] this is why i have
[3:11:42] so much gratitude to you
[3:11:46] i can see so clearly
[3:11:48] that wherever you are you are my
[3:11:50] continuation
[3:11:52] and in one way or another
[3:11:54] you are carrying me into the future
[3:11:57] [Music]
[3:11:58] we
[3:12:00] teacher and student
[3:12:01] will continue to climb the hill of the
[3:12:04] century
[3:12:05] offering our love
[3:12:07] understanding
[3:12:09] freedom
[3:12:10] and solidity to the world
[3:12:12] today
[3:12:13] and forever after
[3:12:16] and
[3:12:17] do you know
[3:12:19] when our mahasanga climbs the hill of
[3:12:22] the century
[3:12:23] the scenery is truly spectacular
[3:12:26] [Music]
[3:12:34] [Music]
[3:12:36] among you
[3:12:38] there are monks and nuns
[3:12:42] there are lay practitioners
[3:12:47] and we are all practitioners whether
[3:12:49] monks or lay
[3:12:51] members
[3:12:53] in vietnamese we have the expression
[3:12:55] suksi
[3:12:57] for monastics and the first part
[3:13:02] in vietnamese means to go forth
[3:13:05] going forth here means to go and join a
[3:13:08] monastic community
[3:13:10] as a member of the monastic community
[3:13:12] we go wherever this anchor needs us to
[3:13:15] go
[3:13:17] we do not have a permanent abode
[3:13:20] among you there are also lay
[3:13:22] practitioners
[3:13:25] the first part of the word
[3:13:27] kusi which means lay practitioner in
[3:13:30] vietnamese
[3:13:31] means to remain
[3:13:33] to stay
[3:13:34] another word for lay practitioner in
[3:13:36] vietnamese is susie
[3:13:39] which means that you have not gone forth
[3:13:41] to become a monastic
[3:13:43] because you have chosen to have a family
[3:13:45] we have other obligations
[3:13:48] however as lay practitioners
[3:13:50] you still have the opportunity to
[3:13:52] practice deeply
[3:13:54] with the presence of lay practitioners
[3:13:58] [Music]
[3:14:00] we can have a complete multi-fold sanger
[3:14:05] the monastic sangha and the lace anger
[3:14:08] rely on each other they support each
[3:14:11] other
[3:14:13] and together we practice to transform
[3:14:15] our suffering and to serve all living
[3:14:18] beings
[3:14:20] sangha is a beautiful community
[3:14:23] working together on the joyful path
[3:14:26] practicing to liberate ourselves
[3:14:28] and to bring peace and happiness to the
[3:14:31] world
[3:14:33] to take refuge in the sangha is our
[3:14:35] basic practice
[3:14:37] helping us to overcome our worries
[3:14:40] our fears and our anxiety
[3:14:45] although life is impermanent
[3:14:48] although there is birth sickness
[3:14:51] old age and death
[3:14:54] now that i have a path of practice
[3:14:57] i have nothing more to fear
[3:15:03] the human rights activist
[3:15:05] dr martin luther king jr
[3:15:08] yearned to build a beautiful community
[3:15:12] a happy community
[3:15:14] with solidarity
[3:15:15] and capacity for activism and engagement
[3:15:19] he called such a community
[3:15:21] the beloved community
[3:15:24] unfortunately he was assassinated at the
[3:15:26] age of 39 in memphis so he could not
[3:15:29] realize his beautiful dream
[3:15:32] we are more fortunate we have been able
[3:15:35] to establish sangers everywhere and so
[3:15:38] wherever we go we can feel at home
[3:15:40] the sangha body is everywhere
[3:15:43] my true home is right here
[3:15:46] we have continued dr martin luther king
[3:15:48] junior's aspiration
[3:15:50] and every day our practice is to
[3:15:52] generate brotherhood and sisterhood to
[3:15:54] cultivate joy and the capacity to help
[3:15:56] people
[3:15:57] this is a concrete way to realize and to
[3:15:59] continue that dream
[3:16:01] but more than that the problems of our
[3:16:04] time have become global
[3:16:06] the buddha of the 21st century can no
[3:16:08] longer manifest as an individual
[3:16:10] one buddha is not enough
[3:16:13] if maitreya the buddha yet to be born
[3:16:17] will manifest in this century thai
[3:16:19] believes that he will manifest in the
[3:16:21] form of a beloved community
[3:16:24] today is the day to commemorate our
[3:16:26] ancestor who established the root temple
[3:16:29] and thai would like to remind you once
[3:16:32] more of his true aspiration so that we
[3:16:35] as teacher and disciples can continue to
[3:16:37] climb the hill of the century together
[3:16:40] tai is very happy whenever he remembers
[3:16:43] that in the present moment we are
[3:16:44] climbing the hill of the 21st century
[3:16:47] together
[3:16:48] we have climbed
[3:16:49] together for 21 years
[3:16:52] it is 21 2021 as i write this letter
[3:16:56] by the year 2050 we will stand on the
[3:16:58] peak of the hill and the view from there
[3:17:00] will be very beautiful
[3:17:02] no less beautiful than the view from
[3:17:04] vulture peak
[3:17:06] bodhichitta greatest aspiration and deep
[3:17:10] love
[3:17:11] first and foremost
[3:17:12] tai wants you to remember that
[3:17:14] bodhichitta the mind of love is the deep
[3:17:17] aspiration the dream of a true
[3:17:20] practitioner
[3:17:21] once the mind of love is eroded we have
[3:17:24] no energy to realize our dream
[3:17:28] we ordain in order to generate great
[3:17:30] love great understanding acceptance
[3:17:33] forgiveness
[3:17:35] inclusivity and we are ready to offer
[3:17:37] ourselves at the service of our fellow
[3:17:40] humans and all living beings
[3:17:44] we ordain in order to free ourselves
[3:17:51] from craving
[3:17:52] attachment
[3:17:54] hatred
[3:17:55] fear
[3:17:57] doubt
[3:17:58] misunderstanding
[3:18:00] ignorance
[3:18:01] and wrong perceptions
[3:18:04] about ourselves about people and life
[3:18:08] and beyond that as zen master linchi had
[3:18:10] put in his opening speech of the
[3:18:12] teachings for the sangha
[3:18:14] we ordain in order to transcend birth
[3:18:16] and death
[3:18:17] to set foot on the path to vast horizons
[3:18:21] and to go beyond the three realms
[3:18:24] we must take care of our bodhichitta to
[3:18:26] keep it bright and beautiful
[3:18:28] we should not lose ourselves in
[3:18:30] consumption nor be satisfied with
[3:18:32] holding certain positions or status in
[3:18:34] the sangha or in society
[3:18:37] we must learn to see ourselves as drops
[3:18:39] of water in the river of the buddha and
[3:18:42] the multi-fold sangha
[3:18:44] we are the continuation of the buddha
[3:18:47] and our ancestral teachers
[3:18:55] [Music]
[3:19:00] we are flowing together as a river and
[3:19:03] at the same time climbing the hill of
[3:19:05] the century with great joy
[3:19:08] however busy you may be
[3:19:10] trained to be present for one another
[3:19:13] during the formal meals to recognize
[3:19:15] your place in that river of liberation
[3:19:18] and to practice living harmoniously with
[3:19:20] all of your brothers and sisters and
[3:19:22] with the oi and lay members and
[3:19:24] practitioners who come to take refuge
[3:19:27] and practice with us
[3:19:29] practice so that you do not become a
[3:19:30] drop of water separated from the river
[3:19:34] not being caught in status money
[3:19:37] praise
[3:19:38] position
[3:19:39] knowing how to go as a river we have a
[3:19:42] bigger chance to realize our dreams
[3:19:49] to light up the awareness of love
[3:19:53] we must truly nourish our brotherhood
[3:19:55] and sisterhood and our love for humanity
[3:19:59] we must truly love one another as
[3:20:01] siblings
[3:20:03] in a blood family
[3:20:05] learning to respect our elders and yield
[3:20:08] to our youngest
[3:20:10] at times we may be unskillful or
[3:20:13] inadvertently hurt one another
[3:20:15] tai is sometimes unskillful but thai
[3:20:18] knows that you are always willing to
[3:20:20] forgive me
[3:20:22] thai feels deeply grateful to you
[3:20:25] you have given me a lot of happiness
[3:20:27] and ty's happiness grows bigger each day
[3:20:31] when he sees that you are able to love
[3:20:34] and forgive one another
[3:20:36] each one of us knows that the more we
[3:20:39] love are in harmony with one another the
[3:20:42] more we are able to heal and become a
[3:20:44] place of refuge for many people
[3:20:48] thai sees that every one of us has made
[3:20:50] a lot of progress on the path of
[3:20:52] practice and transformation
[3:20:55] whether that progress has been quick or
[3:20:58] slow we have all experienced
[3:21:00] transformation
[3:21:03] the practice of eating formal meals
[3:21:05] together
[3:21:06] not only helps us to integrate into the
[3:21:08] river of the buddha and the multifold
[3:21:10] sangha
[3:21:11] it also nourishes our humility and our
[3:21:14] deep vow to serve living beings
[3:21:18] so that we monastic oh i and lay
[3:21:21] practitioners
[3:21:22] can all continue as true descendants of
[3:21:25] the buddha and ancestral teachers
[3:21:28] the monastic life is both humble and
[3:21:31] simple
[3:21:33] your great grand teacher zen master tan
[3:21:36] kui
[3:21:37] was someone of great humility
[3:21:40] in the old days there were venerables
[3:21:42] who would hesitate to bow in greeting to
[3:21:45] our great grand teacher because he would
[3:21:48] bow back
[3:21:49] very deep and very low to express his
[3:21:52] humility and respect for them
[3:21:55] he did not like others frustrating to
[3:21:57] him
[3:21:58] but as a teacher he had to let them do
[3:22:00] it
[3:22:02] when venerable jin yin
[3:22:04] built the stupa for great-grandpa
[3:22:06] teacher
[3:22:07] he had asked the venerable to put a
[3:22:09] statue of the buddha at the very top of
[3:22:11] the stupa
[3:22:13] so that when anyone came to prostrate
[3:22:15] they would be prostrating to the buddha
[3:22:17] and not to him
[3:22:20] at to heel everyone knows this story
[3:22:22] very well
[3:22:24] we must all learn that kind of humility
[3:22:27] from our great grandfather teacher tan
[3:22:29] kui
[3:22:30] that virtue of humility will always
[3:22:33] allow us to stay true to ourselves
[3:22:39] the stupa of interbeing and
[3:22:41] inter-penetration
[3:22:43] we did not ordain in order to gain
[3:22:46] respect and donations from they people
[3:22:49] nor to live in luxury or to have power
[3:22:51] or status
[3:22:53] in fact it is quite the opposite
[3:22:56] because we understand clearly the nature
[3:22:58] of inter-being and inter-penetration
[3:23:01] [Music]
[3:23:02] we appreciate love and respect all the
[3:23:06] different manifestations of life
[3:23:09] reverence is the nature of my love
[3:23:13] we have ordained because of the true joy
[3:23:15] and happiness that comes from being
[3:23:18] liberated from our suffering
[3:23:20] from our wrong views and perceptions
[3:23:23] life is impermanent but we think that it
[3:23:26] is permanent and the biggest mistake is
[3:23:28] to see ourselves as a separate
[3:23:30] self-entity
[3:23:31] not into being with the whole cosmos and
[3:23:34] all beings
[3:23:35] [Music]
[3:23:37] in the past venerable nun nam guyan had
[3:23:41] built for thai a stupa at din kuan
[3:23:44] temple in hanoi
[3:23:46] she had already built it so tai
[3:23:48] instructed her to inscribe a few words
[3:23:51] on the front saying
[3:23:53] there is nothing inside
[3:23:55] i am not
[3:23:57] inside because for sure tai is not lying
[3:24:00] in there
[3:24:02] if people do not understand then there
[3:24:04] should be another sentence
[3:24:06] and i am not outside either
[3:24:09] and if people still do not understand
[3:24:12] then the last sentence should read
[3:24:15] if i am anywhere
[3:24:17] it is in your footsteps and your mindful
[3:24:20] breathing
[3:24:22] for
[3:24:22] the practices that can help to transform
[3:24:25] and heal the people of our time
[3:24:27] [Music]
[3:24:29] is tai stupa
[3:24:31] so those practices are tai stupa
[3:24:34] at fabwang temple or the root temple
[3:24:37] tardin to you
[3:24:39] or any prom village meditation practice
[3:24:41] center
[3:24:42] all over the world there should be
[3:24:45] such a stupa a stupa not made of brick
[3:24:48] and mortar but a stupa made of the
[3:24:52] energy of
[3:24:53] practice everyone who comes whether a
[3:24:56] monk or none
[3:24:57] an oi member
[3:24:59] a buddhist a friend of plum village will
[3:25:02] be invited to enter this stupa of
[3:25:05] practice
[3:25:06] meaning
[3:25:07] they have to learn to walk in
[3:25:09] mindfulness
[3:25:10] to drink tea in mindfulness
[3:25:12] to speak using loving speech and to
[3:25:15] listen deeply
[3:25:18] tai does not want to have a stupa
[3:25:21] because he seeks clearly that he does
[3:25:23] not have a separate self
[3:25:25] and there is not a single moment that
[3:25:28] tai stops manifesting
[3:25:31] in the poem
[3:25:32] please call me by my true names
[3:25:35] tai wrote
[3:25:37] don't say that i will depart tomorrow
[3:25:41] even today i am still arriving
[3:25:45] look deeply
[3:25:47] every second i am arriving to be a bard
[3:25:51] on a spring branch
[3:25:53] to be a tiny bird with still fragile
[3:25:57] wings
[3:25:58] learning to sing in my new nest
[3:26:01] to be a caterpillar in the heart of a
[3:26:03] flower
[3:26:04] to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone
[3:26:09] i still arrive
[3:26:11] in order to laugh and to cry
[3:26:14] to fear and to hope
[3:26:16] the rhythm of my heart is the birth and
[3:26:19] death of all that is alive
[3:26:22] a few years ago in thailand tai taught
[3:26:25] the elder brothers and sisters that when
[3:26:27] the time has come for thai to pass away
[3:26:30] you will organize a funeral of the heart
[3:26:32] for thai according to the spirit of this
[3:26:35] poem
[3:26:37] during this time we will have a noble
[3:26:39] silence retreat so that everyone can
[3:26:41] contemplate thai's manifestation
[3:26:44] in every second and every minute
[3:26:48] so you can see that tai will always be
[3:26:51] present
[3:26:52] in every manifestation of life
[3:26:55] thai really hopes that all the
[3:26:57] monasteries all the members of the order
[3:26:59] of interbeing
[3:27:01] all our practitioners and lay friends of
[3:27:04] our community
[3:27:05] will build for thai a stupa made of our
[3:27:08] own practice in every setting of our
[3:27:11] daily life
[3:27:13] in such a noble silence retreat we will
[3:27:16] walk in mindfulness drink tea in
[3:27:18] mindfulness and use loving speech and
[3:27:21] deep listening
[3:27:23] after the cremation ceremony please
[3:27:25] bring my ashes to spread on the earth to
[3:27:28] nourish the grass and trees
[3:27:30] don't stop the continuation of my ashes
[3:27:33] [Music]
[3:27:35] during the teaching tour in china in the
[3:27:37] autumn of 2001 and
[3:27:39] at peaking i received news from sister
[3:27:42] trum jin that brother yaktan the abbot
[3:27:46] of dear park monastery was on his last
[3:27:49] breaths
[3:27:50] tai had written
[3:27:52] tai wrote this gather for brother yaktan
[3:27:55] and sent it to him just before he passed
[3:27:57] away
[3:28:00] that you are a real gentleman is known
[3:28:02] by everyone
[3:28:04] the work of a true practitioner has been
[3:28:07] accomplished
[3:28:09] when stupa has been raised on the
[3:28:11] hillside
[3:28:13] the sound of children's laughter will
[3:28:16] already be heard
[3:28:19] i comforted and offered guidance to
[3:28:21] brother yaktan with a lot of love and
[3:28:23] trust
[3:28:25] i said
[3:28:26] you just take your time to rest
[3:28:28] you and i will meet each other again and
[3:28:31] we will work together again
[3:28:34] holding each other's hands to climb the
[3:28:36] hill of the century
[3:28:40] in the past i spoke these words to
[3:28:43] brother yaktan
[3:28:44] and today
[3:28:46] on the commemoration day of our
[3:28:48] ancestral teacher who founded the root
[3:28:50] temple thai also wants to tell you this
[3:28:53] the buddha our ancestral teachers
[3:28:56] you and i
[3:28:58] we all continue to hold each other's
[3:29:00] hands
[3:29:01] to climb the hill of the 21st century
[3:29:06] look again you will see me in you and in
[3:29:10] every leaf and flower bud
[3:29:12] if you call my name you will see me
[3:29:14] right away
[3:29:16] where are you going
[3:29:18] the old frangipani tree offers it for
[3:29:21] its fragrant flowers this morning
[3:29:25] you and i have never really been apart
[3:29:29] spring has come
[3:29:30] the pines have put out shining green
[3:29:33] needles and on the edge of the forest
[3:29:36] the wild plum trees have burst into
[3:29:39] flower
[3:29:43] tai sees you in thai's continuation thai
[3:29:47] will never die i pray that the buddha
[3:29:50] will watch over you all so that you can
[3:29:52] be protected in body and mind and be
[3:29:55] able to nourish your joy and be a refuge
[3:29:58] for the sangha and for all who come
[3:30:01] tai sees clearly that you are the
[3:30:04] continuation of the buddha of the
[3:30:06] ancestral teachers and of thai
[3:30:09] through you thai is immortal
[3:30:13] thai has faith in you and this faith is
[3:30:16] solid and unshakable
[3:30:19] tai holds you all in his heart with all
[3:30:23] his love and trust
[3:30:25] may the buddha and ancestral teachers
[3:30:28] offer you great strength and energy
[3:30:31] with love and trust thai
[3:30:36] coming and going in freedom
[3:30:39] don't you know the wind still soars as
[3:30:42] the rains afar continue clouds overhead
[3:30:46] and drops of sunshine touched down from
[3:30:49] above
[3:30:51] earth opens up to a clear blue sky
[3:30:55] still i come and go in freedom
[3:30:58] unconcerned with being or non-being
[3:31:02] come home
[3:31:03] and relax in your mindful steps
[3:31:06] neither waxing or waning is the moon
[3:31:13] and now this poem is being chanted by
[3:31:15] tyfatnim

[3:44:52] and a little more
[3:44:54] smiling
[3:44:56] i will continue
[3:44:59] this wonderful way
[3:45:03] [Music]
[3:45:14] uh
[3:45:15] [Music]
[3:45:33] [Music]
[3:45:35] invites us to
[3:45:37] sit in silence
[3:45:39] for a few minutes
[3:45:42] uh five to ten minutes
[3:45:46] and then after that we shall invite the
[3:45:48] sister newman to
[3:45:51] read a poem as an offering to die
[3:45:58] we are very happy to sit together
[3:46:01] with tai
[3:46:03] tai's dhamma body is of the nature of no
[3:46:06] birth and no death
[3:46:09] tight is always present
[3:46:11] for all of us
[3:52:55] [Music]
[3:53:06] [Music]
[3:53:08] finished reciting a poem
[3:53:11] she's
[3:53:12] been a beloved friend of our community
[3:53:14] in hue
[3:53:15] and a real support to our sister's
[3:53:18] sangha in vietnam
[3:53:20] so wonderful that she can offer this
[3:53:22] poem for thai in this moment
[3:53:33] now we shall
[3:53:42] it's a poem that i wrote while i visit
[3:53:45] india
[3:53:49] when i was sitting on vulture peak
[3:53:53] and i was looking at the sunset
[3:53:59] and i looked at the sunset
[3:54:01] through the buddha's eye
[3:54:05] [Music]
[3:54:13] and in
[3:54:14] this poem it represents
[3:54:17] the
[3:54:22] [Music]
[3:54:30] being rock being gas
[3:54:34] being missed
[3:54:36] being mined
[3:54:39] being the mesons traveling among the
[3:54:41] galaxies at the speed of light
[3:54:44] you have come here my beloved
[3:54:47] and your blue eyes shine
[3:54:50] so beautiful so deep
[3:54:53] you have taken the path traced for you
[3:54:56] from the non-beginning
[3:54:58] and the never-ending you say that on
[3:55:01] your way here you have gone through many
[3:55:03] millions of births and deaths
[3:55:06] innumerable times you have been
[3:55:08] transformed
[3:55:10] into firestorms in outer space
[3:55:15] you have used your own body to measure
[3:55:17] the age of the mountains
[3:55:20] and rivers
[3:55:22] you have manifested yourself
[3:55:24] as trees
[3:55:27] grass butterflies
[3:55:30] single-celled beings
[3:55:32] and
[3:55:33] as chrysanthemums
[3:55:36] but the eyes with which you look at me
[3:55:38] this morning
[3:55:40] tell me
[3:55:41] that you have never died
[3:55:44] your smile invites me into the game
[3:55:48] whose beginning no one knows
[3:55:51] the game
[3:55:52] of hide and seek
[3:55:55] oh green caterpillar
[3:55:58] you are solemnly using your body
[3:56:01] to measure the length of the rose branch
[3:56:03] that grew last summer
[3:56:06] everyone says that you my beloved we're
[3:56:10] just born this spring
[3:56:14] tell me
[3:56:15] how long have you been around
[3:56:18] why wait until this moment to reveal
[3:56:21] yourself to me
[3:56:23] carrying with you that smile
[3:56:26] which is so silent
[3:56:28] and so deep
[3:56:30] oh caterpillar
[3:56:32] suns
[3:56:34] moons and stars flow out
[3:56:37] each time i exhale
[3:56:41] who knows
[3:56:42] that the infinitely large must be found
[3:56:45] in your tiny body
[3:56:48] upon each point on your body thousands
[3:56:51] of buddha fields have been established
[3:56:54] with each stretch of your body we
[3:56:57] measure time
[3:57:00] from the non-beginning
[3:57:02] to the never ending
[3:57:05] the great mendicant of old is still
[3:57:08] there on vulture peak
[3:57:11] contemplating the ever splendid sunset
[3:57:17] gautama
[3:57:19] how strange
[3:57:21] who said that the udembara flower blooms
[3:57:24] only once every three thousand years
[3:57:29] the sound of the rising tide
[3:57:33] you cannot help hearing it
[3:57:35] if you have an attentive
[3:57:41] [Music]
[3:57:52] [Music]
[3:57:58] the same point
[3:58:05] [Music]
[3:58:09] oh
[3:58:13] [Music]
[3:58:36] [Music]
[3:58:45] [Music]

[3:59:38] many of us who are present
[3:59:41] and as we were
[3:59:43] walking
[3:59:44] and going along the procession we were
[3:59:47] so happy
[3:59:49] and we
[3:59:51] had the support of the police
[3:59:54] in order to
[3:59:55] open the path for the big possession of
[3:59:59] cars
[4:00:00] from
[4:00:01] the u temple all the way to this park so
[4:00:04] we're also very grateful to all of the
[4:00:07] police force in
[4:00:09] making our path very smooth

[4:06:39] that she loves of tay
[4:06:43] many of his virtues
[4:06:48] [Music]
[4:06:54] and uh wish to continue today
[4:07:02] dear tiger sangha the monastic community
[4:07:05] will offer thai the song
[4:07:07] looking for each other
[4:07:08] [Music]
[4:07:10] i have been looking for you world
[4:07:13] honored one
[4:07:14] since i was a little child
[4:07:17] with my first breath i heard you call
[4:07:20] and began to look for you
[4:07:23] blessed one
[4:07:24] i've walked so many perilous paths
[4:07:27] confronted so many dangers
[4:07:30] endured
[4:07:31] despair
[4:07:32] fear hopes and memories
[4:07:36] i trekked to the furthest regions
[4:07:39] immense and wild
[4:07:41] sail the vast ocean
[4:07:44] travel the highest summits
[4:07:46] lost among the clouds
[4:07:49] laid dead utterly alone
[4:07:52] on the sands of ancient deserts
[4:07:56] i've held in my heart so many tears of
[4:07:58] stone
[4:08:00] blessed one i've dreamed of drinking
[4:08:03] dewdrops
[4:08:04] that sparkled with the light of far-off
[4:08:07] galaxies
[4:08:09] i've left footprints on calluses
[4:08:12] mountains
[4:08:13] and scream from the depths of avicii
[4:08:16] hell
[4:08:17] exhausted
[4:08:19] crave
[4:08:20] and despair
[4:08:22] because i was so hungry
[4:08:24] so thirsty
[4:08:26] for millions of lifetimes
[4:08:29] i've longed to see you
[4:08:31] but didn't know where to look
[4:08:34] yet i've always felt your presence
[4:08:37] with mysterious certainty
[4:08:40] i know that the thousands of lifetimes
[4:08:44] you and i have been one and the distance
[4:08:47] between us is only a flash of thought
[4:08:51] just yesterday while walking alone
[4:08:55] i saw the old path
[4:08:58] with autumn leaves and the brilliant
[4:09:01] moon
[4:09:02] hanging over the gate
[4:09:05] suddenly appear like the image of an old
[4:09:07] friend
[4:09:09] all of the stars confirmed that you were
[4:09:12] there
[4:09:13] all night
[4:09:15] the rain of compassion continued to fall
[4:09:19] while lighting flashed through my window
[4:09:22] and a great storm arose
[4:09:25] as if earth and sky were in battle
[4:09:29] finally in may the rain stopped
[4:09:33] the clouds parted
[4:09:35] and the moon returned
[4:09:38] shining peacefully
[4:09:40] calming earth and sky
[4:09:43] looking into the mirror of the moon
[4:09:46] suddenly i saw myself
[4:09:49] and i saw you smiling blessed one
[4:09:52] oh how strange
[4:09:55] the moon of freedom has returned to me
[4:09:59] everything i thought i had lost
[4:10:01] from that moment on and in each moment
[4:10:04] that followed
[4:10:06] i saw that nothing had gone
[4:10:08] there is nothing that should be restored
[4:10:11] every flower
[4:10:13] every stone and every leaf recognize me
[4:10:17] wherever i turn
[4:10:19] i see you smiling
[4:10:21] the smile of no birth and no death
[4:10:25] the smile i receive while looking at the
[4:10:28] mirror of the moon
[4:10:31] i see you sitting there
[4:10:33] solid as
[4:10:37] calm mud
[4:10:38] my own breath
[4:10:40] sitting as though no raging firestorm
[4:10:43] ever occurred
[4:10:46] sitting in complete peace and in freedom
[4:10:50] at last i have found you blessed one
[4:10:54] and i have found myself
[4:10:56] there i sit
[4:10:59] the blue
[4:11:00] the deep blue sky
[4:11:02] the snow-capped mountains
[4:11:05] painted against the horizon
[4:11:08] and the shining red sun
[4:11:11] sing with joy
[4:11:14] you
[4:11:15] blessed one
[4:11:16] are my first love
[4:11:19] the love that is always present
[4:11:22] always pure
[4:11:23] and freshly new
[4:11:26] and i shall never need a love that will
[4:11:28] be called last
[4:11:31] you are the source of well-being flowing
[4:11:35] through numberless troubled lives
[4:11:38] the water from your spiritual stream
[4:11:41] always peered
[4:11:43] as it was whole
[4:11:45] as it was in the beginning
[4:11:48] you are the source of peace
[4:11:51] solidity
[4:11:53] and inner freedom
[4:11:56] you are the buddha
[4:12:00] with my one pointed mind
[4:12:02] i vow to nourish your solidity
[4:12:06] and freedom in myself
[4:12:08] so i can offer solidity
[4:12:11] and freedom
